Today, my father showed me a newspaper he had found in our house, excitedly explaining that it was from the year 1962. The paper starred John H. Glenn Jr. and his voyage around the Earth; he had successfully orbited the globe three times. Most of the paper was about this extraordinary event, as all eyes were on him and a sense of pride had swept the nation with his success. Accounts from John Glenn's wife and parents filled the pages, alongside political policy paragraphs, criminal cases and obituaries. It was not until I reached page ten of the newspaper that I stumbled across a small section known as "Activities of Colored People". Though I had studied the time period before and was familiarized with the culture of America in the 60's, holding a newspaper from the time somehow made it seem incredibly recent. From reading a simple sample of the extremes of the positives and negatives of the 1960’s, I found I felt shocked, at first, and then somewhat proud. America as a nation, though greatly imperfect, has come so far from where we were in the 1960's. Not only can we now achieve more than we ever would have thought we could have just 54 years ago in terms of technological advancements, we can achieve, and have achieved, more than what could have been imagined by American minorities in the 1960’s. The strides we as a nation have taken in this relatively short time have been spectacular. There is so much left to do, but there is also so much that we have done. One day, the word of our time will be read as a blast from the past, as this newspaper was by me. Lets work to make what they read a story to be proud of.

Where We Are And Where We Have Been
After finding a newspaper from 1962 in our home, I felt this had to be said.
