Where were we when the sky finally fell?
Forty feet under the earth.
And when lightning struck twice
across a demon’s lapel, where were we?
Four long years from rebirth.
Where were we when the wall came down,
and hope raised her indignant hands?
Where were we when it sprang up, anew?
Weeping in a desolate land.
And when they slew the young king,
when they stormed the stage,
burned the curtain and the actors with glee,
where were we?
Watching at home, on T.V.
When a people woke up
and cried out to nothing,
too late to change what they’d done,
and when the looming shadow fell,
where were we?
Standing in front of the sun.
