Upon hearing the first whisperings of a "Gilmore Girls" revival series, I was hooked, though seldom they had been. I’d grown up watching the show with my mom and older sister, whom I’ve thanked for getting me hooked, even aspiring me to become a writer just like Rory. I may not have gone on to major in journalism or attend an Ivy League school, but I’m still doing as she did and following my dreams. I remember crying in my living room the night the finale aired, wishing and hoping that it truly wasn’t over.
But alas, all good things must come to an end. I’m now at the point where I can watch the episodes over and over and not get bored. I’ll have it playing as I cook, do homework or even on as background noise. I also have a few (more like a lot) Gilmore quips memorized. Including some of my own: a Lorelai-level addiction to coffee, an immense love of snow that I inherited from the show and my own mother and an uncanny ability to talk extremely fast.
When the news officially broke that there would be a revival, andalmost everyone from the original cast was going to be in it, I simply couldn’t contain myself. Every time I see a new link with information about the show or photos from the set, I have to share it. My sister and I have taken to tagging each other in everything we see online, and I’m currently watching the seasons on Netflix for possibly the hundredth time. It was a blessing to have them grace the screen via the Internet rather than having to get up every four episodes to change the DVD disc when binging on a season.
Now that there’s going to be four more 90-minute episodes, and Melissa McCarthy finally saying she’ll reprise her role as the quirky chef, Sookie St. James, obviously I have to pay homage to my all-time favorite TV show. Where would we be in life without Lorelai’s caffeine habit, Luke's backward baseball caps, Rory’s journalistic dream or Emily Gilmore’s withering disapproval? Nowhere but Stars Hollow. We can only hope that the season will end with a wedding between Luke and Lorelai (fingers crossed!) and Rory finally choosing the man of her dreams. Will it be the first love, Dean Forester? The sarcastic ass that is Jess Mariano? Or the hunky millionaire, Logan Huntzberger?
Oy, with the poodles already!
However, we can only hope that Edward Herrmann, aka Richard Gilmore, will be smiling down on us from heaven when these episodes finally do air. The show will truly not be the same without him, but he will always hold a special place in our hearts. Writer Amy Sherman-Palladino will surely grace us once again with the characters we have grown to know and love. And for that, we will always be Gilmore girls.
