When I think of childhood, a strong sense of everything being magical comes to mind. Everything was positive, upbeat and happy. Life had a certain glow and magical feel. Unfortunately, somewhere along the line that magic was lost--everything that was once beautiful and exciting became dull and tiresome.
It starts with the simplest of things--waking up in the morning. Being young, waking up every morning (as early as possible) was magical. There was nothing better than waking up before school to jam in as many episodes of Spongebob as possible, or to eat as many bowls of sugary cereal as your heart desired. Mornings were a magical time, filled with laughter and sugar.
But as we grow older, the magic dies somewhere along the line. Now, it's more appealing to lay in bed until the very last minute possible--to hit snooze way more than you should--and to grab a bar or a banana on your way out the door in a rush. Mornings are no longer magical; They're a time to be tired, groggy and quite frankly, unpleasant.
It goes onto things like chores. When you're young, chores can be one of the most exciting ways to spend an hour or so. Chores can be made into a game of "who can finish the fastest" or "who can clean the best." Nowadays, chores are the least favorite way to spend time. Yes, you could put the dishes away--or you could take a nap.
The list goes on and on; everything that was once exciting and happy is now a chore. Somewhere along the line, without even realizing it, we let life get dull and I think we can all agree that that's not how it should be. It's up to us to find that magic again, and bring it alive.
It's time to revive our mornings--to find that one thing driving us to get out of bed and be excited. Sure, it may not be Spongebob and sugary cereals (although, it totally could be) but that thing is out there. Whether it's treating yourself to a nice sit-down breakfast, adding whip cream and sprinkles to your waffle, or putting a little extra creamer in your coffee, the magic is out there. We just need to find it.
Heck, even the dullest tasks can become magical again. Grocery shopping? Sure. Make it a scavenger hunt. Cleaning around the house? Crank up the music and have a cleaning party. Homework? That one is going to require a little extra effort to find the magic...but it's possible.
Growing older shouldn't equate to a dull, boring, adult life without magic because if that's the case, what's the point of growing up?
