When Your Spring Break Expectations Aren't Reality

"We should hang out over break," *Doesn't hang out at all*

More often than not, things seem better in our head. People, ideas, memories, and even, plans. It also is more incredibly easy to imagine what your spring break will be like, then to actually execute what you envisioned it to be. This can result in a disappointment we know as expectation versus reality.

1. Having nothing planned

Everyone is gushing about their trips abroad, or their cruise, but you’re just going home. Maybe you didn’t plan anything, but also, how did everyone put everything together so easily? In the haziness of school and life you didn’t think to plan a trip. There’s always next year?

2. Getting ready to go

It always feels like you have it figured out when the break approaches. You plan to pack your car, do all your laundry, finish up all your work, etc. When the day to leave approaches, that is definitely not the case. You’re doing that thing with your laundry where it’s all clean and you pick what you need out of it. Also, you woke up late and left at 3 p.m. instead of 10 a.m. You probably have five missed calls from your mom.

3. “We should totally hang out!”

You made plans with all your friends from back home but they all end up falling through. Some friends you haven’t talked to in so long, it might be weird to reach out to them. You end up simply hanging out with your family instead.

4. Getting work done

You have resolutions to complete over break. Get three shades darker, read a couple books, maybe start that blog you’ve been wanting to write? The first couple of days you decide to hibernate because you deserve it. Then you need to catch up on your television... and before you know the break is over. You always say that if you had more time, you could do these things. But with the time, comes a little friend we all know as procrastination.

5. Going back home

Okay, well that went way faster than expected. The realization dawns on you that you didn’t complete what you wanted to, but the break was much needed.

Sometimes, things don’t go as expected. It seems as though everyone else has planned their spring breaks better, but then again it always looks that way from the outside. You may have not gotten that cinematic "wild" spring break, but you did get some sleep out of it, and that is still a pretty solid deal.

When I was learning how to talk, I was taught both Portuguese and English at the same time. In elementary school, I started taking mandatory Spanish classes, which I did well in because of my knowledge of Portuguese. Then in high school, on top of taking Spanish, I also started taking French. Now, in college, already fluent in English and Portuguese, I'm in the process of becoming fluent in Spanish, and I have a standard high school level understanding of French.

I am without a doubt one of those people who refuses to start decorating for Christmas or listen to Christmas music until after Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, Thanksgiving has become an underrated holiday over the years. You barely see any Thanksgiving decorations in stores; it's like they skip right from Halloween to Christmas.
