When Your College Is Your Second Home

All that is missing is your pets (there are some crazy squirrels, though).

When Your College Is Your Second Home

With any college you choose to go to, it is always a gamble. You may like it while touring, but you never know what it's truly like until you are actually living there. Being away from home can be really hard, but the moment your dorm room becomes your second home is a special day to any student.

I am very fortunate because my college is like my second home. From my dorm room down to the Student Center, I have finally made a second home for myself at my school. The food isn't as good as my mom's, but it's made and served with love for the most part.

So how do you know when your college has become your second home?

You know your college is your second home when you can't wait to get back to your room to set up your new stuff. Whether it be a poster, decorative pumpkin or pillow, if it's new and going in your room — you can't wait to get there.

You know your college is your second home when your neighbor is the one who helps you when you're sick, need advice, or have any other domestic duties to complete.

You know you have found your second home at school when you feeling comfortable being as antisocial at school, as you are when you are home...

You can be as weird as you want. Let the dance parties and karaoke sessions begin!

You have your own secret place to be alone when you need time to think. It's your own little safe haven to relax and be to yourself (maybe the library or the little, hidden area at the Student Center).

The cooking staff give you giant portions and act like you have never taken enough to eat, no matter how much food you put on your tray.

The staff treats you like your mom would treat you: with hugs, laughter, and a bit of tough love when needed.

You know you have found your second home at your college when you find a strange peace walking around campus alone...even if you're worried about clowns.

You know you made a second home at your school when your RA basically becomes your mom...even if she is younger than you...

You've thought about commuting...but college just wouldn't be the same if you didn't have your second home here!

Welcome home!

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
