When Your Anxiety Gets The Best Of You

You are never alone.

We all have those days. One small, trivial thing can turn your whole world upside down, and you no longer want to leave your bed for the rest of your life. But for some horrible reason, the rest of the world keeps moving. Your homework is still there, the clock keeps ticking, and all you want to do is scream at it to stop. But it won't.

And that's OK. Never feel guilty for wanting the world to stop turning so that you can have a moment to just take a deep breath and breathe fully again. Take that time. Slow down. Yes, the rest of the day keeps coming, but your mental health is more important than that homework assignment you still have to start or the meeting you have in a few hours. Take a few hours to yourself, and you'll be feeling like yourself again in no time.

Cry. As much as you need to for as long as you need to. Do not keep that emotion and anxiety inside of you because that will not help anything. Have a roommate? Cry in the shower. Just wash all that anxiety and fear off of you while you let it all out at the same time. You will seriously feel like a whole new person after washing it all away.

Get away. Get out of the environment you are in, and go somewhere you can relax. Go to a Starbucks and bring your laptop so you can watch Netflix while you drink something hot. Go to Target and browse through everything they and maybe even buy some stuff to feel better. Wherever makes you feel happiest and wherever can distract you the most. Because sometimes you just need to get away from the situation.

Cuddle up in your favorite comfy clothes, put on your favorite movie, and turn off the lights. Be comfy and watching the movie you know every word to. Use it as a security blanket and distract your mind.

Being anxious is the worst feeling in the world, but you also have to remember to do basic things. Most importantly, sleep and eat. Not sleeping will make your brain even more wired, making you even more anxious and not helping with the problem. You also need to eat in order to be a healthy human being. Even if it's an entire pint of Ben and Jerry's ice cream, it's better than nothing. Your brain may not feel healthy right now, but the rest of you should be.

Always remember, that you are not alone. Anxiety and being anxious is something that happens to almost everyone. I'd honestly like to meet the person who has never needed a mental health day before. So if you need a day to not do anything and take care of yourself, then take it. Your body and your mind will seriously thank you. Because mental health is a real issue, no matter how much people criticize it.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
