When We Think God Has Turned His Back On Us

He thinks otherwise.

When We Think God Has Turned His Back On Us
Julian Rees

I see posts on Facebook and Twitter and hear people asking, “Why has God left our nation?” In utter disbelief that someone would ask such a thing, I began to think about that question for a moment. I began to realize that people at any age could very well assume that God has left our nation. All the hatred that is before us, such as the recent shootings, race wars and the targets on police officers, is happening simply because the Lord has turned His back on us. But, as a believer and follower of the Lord, I do not agree nor do I believe that God has left and turned His back on our nation but, that we (as a nation) have turned our backs on Him.

When our nation was founded, we were built as “One nation under God." We included God in our daily Pledge of Allegiance. Our American currency says ‘In God We Trust’ on the face of each bill and coin piece. But of course, in today’s amoral society, there have been multiple lawsuits against The United States in order to remove ‘In God We Trust’ off the faces of our currency and to remove “One nation under God” out of the Pledge of Allegiance because it supposedly “infringes upon separation of Church and State."

Psalm 46:1 says, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” and Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted in the earth!” Through all our troubles, hardships, and battles, God is our rock. He is there for us even when we don’t see Him. The Word says in 2 Thessalonians 3:2-3 that “For not all men have faith. But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.” I have no doubt in my mind that the Lord will be my refuge in all times of evil. We have let evil host in the crevices of our lives causing us to be hateful, judgmental, and unaccepting of all of God’s creations.

We as a nation should begin to learn to love one another; no matter one’s skin color, race, culture, religion, sexual orientation, or political views. John 13:34-35 says, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” To truly love the Lord, we must love all of His people and his creations that were placed on this earth.

So, I do not and will not believe that the Lord has forsaken us. He will forever be who we can take refuge in and He will be our defense against all evil that shall come before us during our lifetimes on this earth. In the meanwhile, we should spread the love of Christ throughout the nation and try to restore faith in all of humanity. For it is then, that this nation will be showered with the grace of God.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
