When you send your child to Longwood University...

They will go on a tour and quickly fall in love with the beautiful brick buildings all around campus and the cascading fountains found on different ends of the school. They will see friends socializing and laughing on campus, picturing themselves doing the same. It will feel like home.

Once they decide Longwood is home, they will move into Curry, Frazer, or one of the other dorms their freshman year. They’ll hold doors for familiar faces in their building and say hello to the desk aid every time they walk by. They’ll create strong relationships with the people in their suite and on their hall, and make memories in the dorm with the people they love. They'll experience the random fire drills (so hopefully they're not showering) and have the monthly hall meeting run by their RA.

When you send your child to Longwood they will have so many opportunities to get involved and join clubs or organizations that spark their interest. There are so many to choose from, whether its Peer Mentors, WMLU, or Greek Life, they will find something they love.

Soon they will learn the traditions of the campus and step on every crown they pass on their way to class or a big exam, but also be trained to never make a step on the rotundas. They’ll go to Chi Walks and get a feel for the historical traditions Longwood has continued. They will wait in line in the late summer heat, for that year's new scarf and proudly wear to the G.A.M.E with new friends made.

They will make their way to the bookstore often, where they will be tempted to buy everything inside, but soon realize the place to go for cute t-shirts is Pairets. So, fair warning parents, there will be a lot of them.

Throughout their time at Longwood, they will quickly learn that Tuesday is bowling night and Thursday nights means El Patron. They will participate in Oktoberfest every fall along with Bandfest and Spring Weekend in the second semester. Even though they are a Lancer they will also be a Tigers fan on the weekends, attending football games and baseball games cheering on their friends.

They will learn that Willet Hall isn't just where they will have health class, but it is also home to the D1 Basketball teams and other athletics.

When you send your child to Longwood they will fall in love with the shops, boutiques, and restaurants downtown. They will bike or hike on High Bridge Trail and most likely take pictures with the LOVE letters. They will participate in Color Wars against other classes and color a new t-shirt they made custom downtown from Pariets. They will be grateful they chose Longwood and the size that it is, when they are struggling to wake up and get out of bed in the morning, since it only takes about five to 10 minutes to get to class. They will see familiar faces around campus and create bonds and friendships with so many other Lancers.

Most importantly, when you send your child to Longwood they will grow so much as a person. They will know the value of a smaller university, be given more opportunities than they thought imaginable, and make bonds and connections with so many people.

Go Lancers!

One of my biggest pet peeves is when someone does not try to help their self before asking others. How can someone else be expected to help you if you do not first do that yourself? I'm all about helping those that need it when the time comes, however whenever someone does not even attempt to help him or herself first then that becomes a huge problem. As we all have learned, people tend to take advantage of us in one way or another. I am sure we all read this short story when we were younger and it follows that same principle:
