When You Give A Girl A Random Roommate

So when you give a girl a random roommate, you are giving her the friend who will always have her back and will always be there for her.

When You Give A Girl A Random Roommate
Sarah Philpot

Backstory: The summer before my senior year of high school, I went to a summer leadership camp for student council. Generally at this camp, you room with people from your high school. I ended up rooming with a girl from across the state and let me tell you, I couldn’t imagine life without her.

When you give a girl a random roommate, you’re giving her the chance to make a best friend. You are giving her the chance to find her soul sister, her person, and her best friend. When you give a girl a random roommate, you are giving her someone she’ll stay up all night talking to and be exhausted all next day at camp. Someone she will tell her life story to even though they just met.

My roommate became my soul sister. We had so much in common it was crazy. She shared her snacks with me and we talked about life all night. Leaving camp was hard, especially since we didn’t know when we would see each other again. We cried and hugged, telling each other how much we loved each other, hoping to see each other soon. The last night at camp we stayed up talking all night, writing letters to our council (we were mixed into groups with students from other schools. The groups were called councils, and each council was a letter of the alphabet. I was in Council S and my roommate was in Council W.) You write you council letters called magic notes. My roommate and I stayed up all night talking, writing our magic notes, and eating the rest of her snacks. So when you give a girl a random roommate, you are giving her someone to share snacks with and late night conversations. You are giving her someone to make memories with and share moments with.

It would be a year before we saw each other again, at a student council conference in my hometown. We ran up to each other and hugged forever. We had a year's worth of hugs to catch up on. But that next year we seemed to have lost touch for while, but whenever we talked, we could pick up where we left off, because when you give a girl a random roommate, you are giving her a life long best friend. When you give her a lifelong best friend, you are giving her someone she can just pick up where they left off.

And here we are a year later, and I will get to see her soon again. And of course, we have a year’s a worth of hugs to catch up on again. And a year’s worth of stories to tell that are too much to type out in a text. So when you give a girl a random roommate, you are giving her the friend who will always have her back and will always be there for her.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
