When you give a girl a pencil, she will find herself.
She will have a way to let her emotions out. With that pencil, pen, or keyboard, she has found a way to put her thoughts into words. Finally, her mind makes a little bit more sense. She has an outlet for her sadness, fears, and even happiness. She now knows herself.
When you give a girl a pencil, you are opening a whole new world.
With the pencil, she can do whatever she wants. She can write the love story she's always dreamed of, or draw a picture of her favorite landscape. She can take notes in class, and use them in advantage to her success.
When you give a girl a pencil, she will find her best friend.
When she's happy, sad, mad or just bored; she will turn to the pencil. She will let her emotions and fears out on the paper. When she's upset with that boy, maybe she will write him a letter. She'll crumble it up and throw it in the trash, no one will ever see it. She's found someone--or something, to confide in.
When you give a girl a pencil, watch her rise.
She's found a way to argue her opinions. She's found a way to intelligently argue why Donald Trump shouldn't be President of the United States. (Okay, I'm talking about myself. We'll save that for another article.) A way to fight stigmas, address uncomfortable situations, reevaluate stereotypes. She's discovered a way to get her words, thoughts, opinions, and ideas into the world. She will become confident.
When you give a girl a pencil, you are giving her an eraser.
Within her writing, she will learn to let go. She's learned to embrace the heartache, let it out, and then move on. She's found an outlet. She will erase her mistakes and sadness as if she's erasing a mistake in her writing.
When you give a girl a pencil, she will find her passion.
Whether it is writing, drawing, reading, or music, it will start with a pencil. She will write her feelings, draw her dreams, read a book to get away and sing or play her wishes. Whether she makes it a career or a hobby, she's found something she will do for the rest of her life.
When you give a girl a pencil, she will create opportunities.
With this pencil, she will put herself out there. Maybe she will write for her school newspaper, or have her own blog or maybe she'll be the best reporter in the city.
All of this started the first time she drew a picture. It all started the first time she wrote a short story in the third grade--The first time her high school English teacher told her she was a good writer. When you give a girl a pencil, she will conquer the world.
