When You Give A Girl Older Cousins
Stefani Rosado

I was lucky enough to grow up in a family where my cousins were more like my siblings. We have shared a lot of laughs, cries, fights, and memories over the years which has brought us closer in many ways. When you give a girl older cousins, you're giving her a lot of great things.

When you give a girl older cousins, you are giving her memories. From family vacations, to holidays, to birthdays. Your cousins were there for it all and recalling memories from the past is always a good time.

You are giving her endless inside jokes.

You are giving her siblings. If you're an only child like me, then your cousins are the closest thing you have to siblings. You laugh, play, fight, and most importantly- love each other as if they were your brother or sister.

When you give a girl older cousins, you are also giving her automatic best friends.

You are giving her a support system and protectors. Nobody watches out for you better than older cousins. If someone hurts you they are the first ones to be there to comfort you, and find out where that person who hurt you lives...

You are giving her embarrassing family photos that will haunt her for the rest of her life.

Exhibit A:

When you give a girl older cousins, you are most definitely giving her endless teasing and practical jokes being played on her. Yeah, these may be traumatizing but it comes with being the younger cousin. At least if gives you a tough skin and you just end up getting used to it

You are giving her people who can relate to the craziness that is your family. Nobody understands how crazy your family like your cousins. At least it gives you something to talk about at family parties.

You are giving her people who know you better than you know yourself.

When you give a girl older cousins, you are giving her role models. From the time you were little you've always looked up to your older cousins. You have watched them grow and learn from their mistakes, and will always admire them for it.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
