When You Dream Too Big

It's a hard life for us dreamers out there.

When You Dream Too Big
Janet Chapman

I've always had huge dreams. My entire life. I've wanted to do and see and become things that no one in my life thought was possible. They didn't discourage me, but they didn't really make me feel like I could without a doubt accomplish them. This never stopped me though. My dreams have always been huge, and they've always been changing. I've learned with my giant, changing dreams that I have to rely on myself to encourage myself. Other people will still be encouraging, but they will also have a little bit of the whole "but didn't you just want to do that..." kind of vibe. Right now, my dreams are massive, and this is kind of hard to handle.

When you dream too big, you have to be prepared for disappointment. But never expect it. If you expect your own failure, you encourage your own failure. Expect to succeed and to excel in whatever you dream of. But be prepared just in case things don't turn out exactly as you had planned. Disappointment doesn't necessarily mean failure. Maybe things went well, just not quite the way you had hoped they would go. Expect success but prepare for disappointment.

Surround yourself with reminders of your dream. I put up pictures, posters, post-it notes, anything. I surround myself with reminders of what I am working for every day. It helps keep me going when I feel like I will never reach my dream. When you dream as big as I do, it takes quite a while to accomplish your goals and sometimes you begin to feel like you'll never achieve your dreams. When you surround yourself with reminders of what you're working for, it will help to remind you that all of your hard work is worth it.

Don't let others tear you down. Trust me, they'll try. They'll say your dream isn't realistic. You need to say "I don't care, I'll make it my reality." When you have determination, it will be hard for anyone to deter you from your goal. It will be harder for you to talk yourself away from your goal on a bad day. When you refuse to let others tear you down, you also prevent yourself from tearing you down.

There's so much more to do when you're working towards giant dreams, but most of it is dream-specific. For me, my dream is to be a Mary Kay Independent Sales Director and an incredible ER nurse. Yes, simultaneously. It will be hard. It will probably suck to work toward. But the idea of what I can accomplish gives me power and ambition to work toward it. The giant dream I have is helping urge me forward and I hope your dreams do the same for you.

What do you do when you dream too big? You work for it.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
