When You Can't Stop Playing Your Favorite Song

Ellie Goulding’s newest song was released this week. I’m totally not freaking out at all at the moment. Let me just say that I have listened to that song on repeat non-stop this past week. I am obsessed with it!

If you don’t know what song I’m talking about, search for “Still Falling For You” on any device near you ASAP.

I think anyone, no matter how young or old can relate to this song based on past experiences. Yeah, yeah, yeah it’s another “relationship” song, but her lyrics have so much meaning to them.

“This love is like fire and ice. This love is like rain and blue skies.”

This is one of my favorite lyrics out of the entire song. Why you ask? It’s because every relationship has its ups and downs. Ellie is basically saying that it is okay to have a disagreement- because what relationship have you ever had or seen that they don’t agree every once in a while? If you have, let me know! Anyways, it’s healthy to have a disagreement with your partner unless it leads to worse things. If that happens, you need to get out as fast as you can.

“It took us a while because we were young and unsure. With love on the line, what if we both would need more. But all your flaws and scars are mine.”

“But all your flaws and scars are mine.”Wow. Well, that’s pretty deep. It’s nice that she is bringing up the fact that we all have scars and baggage. I love that this lyric raises the idea of self-awareness and acceptance of each other and yourself. I’ve never understood how someone can find nothing wrong with themselves or they find something/everything wrong with another person yet can’t point out and accept their own flaws. I don’t hang around people who are like that. Ellie Goulding says that a relationship should be of love and acceptance between two people. It takes two to make a relationship work. Maybe that’s why I’ve had bad luck.

No one can lift me, catch me the way that you do. I'm still falling for you.”

This is the lyric that I don’t necessarily agree with. You can lift yourself up and catch yourself. You don’t need a significant other to always help pick yourself up. This goes back to loving yourself and accepting yourself for who you are. But, sometimes having that person that cares for always makes things just a little bit better. On a side note, I am in no way a relationship expert. This is probably why I’m still single. Hey, but I am proud to say that I love myself and you should too.

Anyways, I’m going to go back to listening to Ellie’s new song, like I’ve been doing and having my own dance party in either my bedroom or in my kitchen. If not a dance party, then a free karaoke show in my car. Hope the people next to me enjoy my rendition of “Still Falling For You.” Feel free to join me if you’d like.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
