Okay. This is a very popular debate between my friends and I. My family has never really celebrated Thanksgiving, so normally the day after Halloween is when I start putting Christmas decorations up and when Christmas songs start playing. Honestly, sometimes it's earlier than that. Most of my friends, on the other hand, are in the "You must wait for Thanksgiving" camp, berating me for skipping glossing over Thanksgiving. Alas, in the following, there will be arguments from both sides.
We'll start with anti-Christmas before Thanksgiving.
Alright, so, Thanksgiving is a big part of the US's history. It's literally the reason we are all here today—otherwise the pilgrims would have starved and we wouldn't be here. Also, it's literally a holiday to give thanks and appreciate what we have.
Plus, Christmas is ultimately a Christian holiday. What about Jewish, Hindu, Muslim, and other people? They feel left out because this gigantic holiday is built around a religion that isn't theirs and literally rejects their way of thought. And if they celebrate it, it's because they've been forced to or they're assimilating. Christmas consumerism and decorations literally permeate everywhere. Thanksgiving is a secular holiday and is literally a day of thanks for all we have gotten. What better holiday is there?
Now, the Christmas side.
First of all, Thanksgiving is only celebrated in the United States. Christmas is celebrated all over the world. The world trumps the United States.
Second of all, Thanksgiving was about using and then murdering a bunch of Native Americans and taking over their land. Yeah, let's give thanks to white supremacy!
Christmas, although a Christian holiday, has become a big thing among those who aren't Christian. Atheists and other secular people celebrate Christmas even though they don't believe in Jesus. Christmas is about the Christmas spirit, family, the joy of helping others and giving people presents. Though a lot of companies have taken advantage of that, that's still what it's all about. What better holiday is there?
Now that you've heard both sides, what do you think?
