We've all been there.
You make plans to grab lunch or coffee, or maybe to take a drive to see an old friend. You've been looking forward to it all week - a chance to just take some time to relax and have fun. Nothing can stop you.
And then something stops you.
Maybe it's the snow. Maybe you've got a flat tire. Maybe your sitter canceled, or maybe your friend got called into work for an emergency. As many reasons as you want to go, there are an infinite number of variables that you just can't account for. Sometimes plans fall through.
And sometimes that's okay.
This past Monday I was supposed to drive up to the Northern Mountains of New Hampshire to see a friend I haven't seen in two years. Unfortunately, as hard as it was to get out of my driveway because of the snow, it was clear that the drive North would only be that much worse. We had to cancel.
I tried to reach out to my friend J who was supposed to be going with me, and I got no answer. The roads between my house and the friends I was picking him up at were decidedly safer than the ones going North, and since I was already out of my driveway, I headed down my mountain to see if we could pass the time with a couple beers and a movie.
Plan B quickly gave way to Plan C - hanging out with J and his friend K. This, ultimately, lead to a full blown snowball war that included K’s two children, some yummy coffee, and playing video games with some pretty awesome people. We eventually left, promising to visit the next day, and headed to the movies to watch Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
(Spoiler alert - we're going to see it again today.)
We managed to top off the night by stopping to see our favorite waiter at the Denny’s near the theater, then going back to J’s to watch The Boondock Saints and The Good Place with a couple of beers.
My point here is simple - cancelled plans do not have to mean a ruined day. Sometimes, it's an opportunity to make new memories and new friends.
And for those of us facing unfortunate weather, stay safe!
