When The Hard Work Doesn't Pay Off

It's tempting to just say "f*** it" and throw in the towel.

It’s happened to all of us at one point or another. You work really hard on something and the results are not what you were hoping for. Take that test for example. You know, the one that you spent hours upon hours studying for and you still made a D. Think about that time when you applied for a job. You know that you’re perfect for the job and you work hard to convince others that you’re the ideal candidate but then BOOM, you don’t get hired. Think about the time that you ran for an office, maybe student government or another organization. You spoke eloquently during debates, your campaign ads were on point and you did everything just right, and then you didn’t elected.

It’s frustrating. No, it’s infuriating.

It drives you absolutely crazy that even with all that work, all of those hours, all of that effort and you still get bad results. It makes you want to just say “f*** it” and throw in the towel because you did all of that work with nothing to show for it.

Stop. That thought right there. “All of that work for nothing.” That is where you’re wrong. Yes you stayed up late studying your heart out, yes you did everything right to get that job, yes you did everything you could to make sure things turned out how you wanted them to and yes you didn’t get the results that you wanted, but that doesn’t mean that you haven’t gained anything.

So you made a lousy grade. It has happened to the best of us. But hey, now you know what you need to do to make a better grade on the next test. Your study skills will improve.

So you didn’t get a job that you wanted. Don’t automatically blame yourself. The professional world is full of politics-you may have been perfect for the job and just not have been the right person. I know that it is frustrating, but that is how the world is sometimes. Through this experience, you will learn how to deal with frustration in a mature manner. It sucks but the more frustration you encounter, the better you become at handling it.

So you didn’t get elected. Through this process, you learned how to run a campaign and how to debate among other things.

Keep applying. Keep running.

Keep going.

I say this from a place of experience- when one opportunity falls through, take the time you need (within reason) to be upset but then get up and apply for something else. Perseverance will get you a lot further than you might think.

Your outlook influences your life more than you know. You have the power to turn any situation, no matter how sh*tty, into a positive. Sometimes the only positive that comes from a situation is that you learn or that you mature a little but hey, you learned something and you matured a little. That’s something!

Adopting an attitude of positivity will change your life and the lives of the people around you. Have you ever been around someone with a bad attitude or someone who is being pessimistic? Have you noticed how easy it is for their bad attitude to rub off on you or the people around you? A good attitude works the same way! You may not realize it at first, but people really appreciate someone with a good attitude.

So I leave you with this- keep going. Don’t throw in the towel. Adopt a positive outlook. You got this.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
