In many of my classes, I am one of the few black students. So of course when we engage in these discussions there is always a minority that believes we should just move on and get over it. We should forget all of our struggles and how our nation was formed on the backs of African-American slaves. It usually begins with some statement, the main point of which has to do with integration between all races, and is followed by a hesitant look over in my direction and at other black students in the class with the phrase “no offense”. Anytime someone says “no offense” I immediately take offense. I believe that every black student has gone through or will endure the same awkward situations and struggles throughout the entirety of this month. Thanks to Raven and Stacey Dash those awkward situations have only intensified. Thanks, ladies, for making it extra difficult for us this Black History month. Everyone is comfortable learning how to whip and nae nae or hit the quan. Or wants to try doing their hair in corn rows. How about you whip open that textbook and learn about the culture you’re appropriating? Do you see how exhausting it gets to only be acknowledged when people can benefit from what you contribute? We don't like being used for the parts of us you all enjoy. If you want to copy aspects of our culture, then at least acknowledge all of it. Not just the fun and popular portions. Learn about every aspect of it, not just the parts you want to learn about.
But I understand why people only focus on the pop culture aspects of our culture. It is because that is the only thing they are shown through the media. Up until recently. February 7. Superbowl Sunday.
So, yes, it is Black History Month. But African-American history is something that should not be studied only in February, it is something that we need to make sure we are aware of constantly and continuously. I feel as if with everything going on we are reaching a pivotal point in African-American history, especially with the Black Lives Matter movement, so it is crucial for us to open our eyes and ears and be aware of our surroundings and what is happening around us.
