I sat on my laptop searching through Facebook, looking for ideas on what to write about, and I came upon a story from June 2014 about a mother and father’s tragic but beautiful request for their daughter who had died tragically at the age of six weeks. The story wasn’t a fun read, until the end. I’ll explain soon.
Sophia Steffel was born with a rare liver tumor called hepatic hemangioma. You can read the full story here (http://q13fox.com/2014/07/16/a-fathers-heartbreaking-request-the-sweet-and-sad-story-behind-these-photos/). Her parents from Kalida, Ohio never got their child out of the hospital, and she passed away before they could take a picture of their child without the tubes that were used to try to save the young girl’s life. Her father, Nathan Steffel, posted a message on popular blogging website Reddit asking for the social media community to work their editing magic for a good cause: to get Sophia’s loved one’s a picture of her without her tubes in.
The Internet community gladly obliged.
Pictures poured in from all over, users of all sorts used Photoshop, other editing techniques, or even hand-drew pictures of young Sophia without her medical tubes. Her family now had the pictures they had been asking for. Though young Sophia may had never had a life without the tubes, the girl’s life shone brightly to her family in these new pictures of their little girl.
It goes to show, no matter how dark the world is or may seem at the time, there will always be good people in the world, and therefore, there will be a hope in the world. Do your best every day to make someone else’s day better.
