Picture this: You start talking to a new guy. You get to know each other, he flirts with you and you casually flirt back. The conversation is going really well, until he hits you with that text... "We should hang out."
If you're anything like me, you instantly begin to over-analyze. What does he mean by 'let's hang out?' I hang out with my friends all the time, which consists of gossiping, eating tons of fatty foods, blasting music and watching the latest episode of "The Bachelorette." Does a guy really want to watch JoJo pick the wrong guy with me? It's easy to say, "Sure, what do you have in mind," but the answers are usually vague, and leave you wondering what exactly you'll be doing. With that being said, my question to the guys of the 21st century is, what exactly does 'hang out' mean? Do you want to get some ice cream, play Pokemon Go and end the night with a fist bump? Or is it really code for what should be a first date? Call me old fashioned, but I would rather have a guy ask to take me out, then him say we should hang out.
I know I can't seriously be the only one to think this way, because even typing, 'What does it mean to hang out?' into Google shows endless questions, responses and articles to the simple phrase. It's a term used to describe the period of getting to know each other before pursuing something further. But worrying about hanging out comes with the same thoughts as a first date... What should I wear? What are we going to do? What should I say? Our minds race, thinking of the endless possibilities of what should and could happen. At 20-years-old, I don't want to just hang out with a guy; I can do that at a party. To the next guy who asks me to 'hang out', please clarify your meaning.
Sincerely,
Confused girls of America
