For those of you who love to travel, this article is for you. Berlin is a city with a fascinating history, delicious food, and active culture. After visiting Berlin for three weeks last summer with my campus ministry, I fell in love. If you get a change to visit this beautiful city, don't pass it up! While I could go on for days, here a few activities you won't want to miss:
1. Visit the Berliner Dome.
The trip to the top is exhausting, but trust me, it’s worth it.
2. Eat lots of döner kebabs (a.k.a. döners).
I mean eat a lot of the döners, because once you’re gone, you will miss them quite a lot. Note: they can be found on nearly every other street in Berlin.
3. Also eat all the gelato.
Again, this is a specialty you’ll miss after the trip. At a euro per scoop, this sweet treat is a steal.
4. Try speaking at least a little German.
Germans may look at you like you’re crazy, but learning is never a bad thing. Google translate does the work for you too!
5. Bring your walking shoes and brace yourself for public transportation.
You’ll be exhausted at the end of each day, but it’s the best kind of exhausted there is.
6. Check out the Brandenburg Gate.
It’s a beautiful work of art and its massive size gives us all some needed perspective.
7. Visit the Holocaust memorial.
It’s a sobering experience that everyone would benefit from.
8. Check out the remnants of the Berlin Wall too.
It’s crazy to see how different the culture is not even 30 years later.
9. Visit as many parks as you can.
Germans love to be outdoors and their parks are beautiful. The Tiergarten in the middle of the city is especially gorgeous.
10. Be careful around street performers.
They may give you a smooch if you get to close.
11. Drink the coffee every chance you get.
It has a rich, full flavor that cannot be matched. Did I also mention that it’s delicious?
From sights to tastes, Berlin is rich in history with a unique and fun culture. So when in Berlin, explore all you can and have a good time. Gute Reise! (Safe travels!)
