This week I was fortunate enough to spend a couple of days in Bayfield, Wis. Every summer that I have been dating my boyfriend, we have made it a priority to visit at least once a year. I have been to lots of different cities in world, including Paris, Rome, Florence, Barcelona, New York City, Nashville, etc. However, Bayfield has remained one of my absolute favorite towns. This quiet and artistic community located right on the shores of Lake Superior has a rich history of shipwrecks, fishing and aquatic exploration. Only four hours away from the Twin Cities, it's an excellent vacation spot for anyone looking for an affordable and exciting getaway. Here are six things you must see and do while in Bayfield, WI.
1. Eat Whitefish.
One of Lake Superior's many gems is the fresh water fish, Whitefish. It's fantastic no matter how you prepare it, and it is harder to find the further you get from Lake Superior. One of the best restaurants we ate Whitefish at was the Pier Plaza right in town with a wonderful view of Lake Superior. You can also find Whitefish at any of the local fish markets.
2. Visit Eckels Pottery and Fine Craft.
Originally called "The Pot Shop," Eckels was started by a local artist named Bob Eckels. The shop has been expanded by Eckels' daughter who has opened up the business to other locals looking to sell their art. Over the years their family has heavily contributed to the artistic community of Bayfield. I would recommend reading their story and paying a visit to a unique, local shop where no two art pieces are the same.
3. VisitErickson Orchards.
Two words: apple donuts. If you have a sweet tooth and/or love of delicious pastries, you will want to stop at Erickson Orchard. They are a local, family owned business that also makes their own, honey, jam, jellies, cider and other foods. Every year we get a dozen apple donuts and a gallon of apple cider and both are usually gone by the time we get back home.
4. Go hiking.
There are numerous beautiful hiking trails in and near Bayfield. My favorite was the Myers Beach Hiking Trail. It was a bit challenging especially with all the of the mud after the rains, but it was worth it to see the Lake Superior Sea Caves and views of the Apostle Island. They have lots of trails that differ in both length and difficulty. "Outdoorsy" is the last adjective I would use to describe myself, but if you are willing to challenge yourself, hiking can be a lot of fun in Bayfield.
5. Go berry picking.
We missed the start of the season by a week but you go to Bayfield in the summer most of the surrounding orchards will allow you to go berry picking. From apples to strawberries, the possibilities for fresh fruit are endless. Most of the orchards are locally owned, family businesses.
6. Pay a visit to Madeline Island.
There is a ferry that will take you directly from Bayfield to the popular Madeline Island. Here you still find a few shops and restaurants as well as some nice hiking trails. While it's not very big, it's best if you can pay the extra to have your car send with you on the ferry. Driving on the island will save you time to do more activities.
So there you have it. Most people don't think of Wisconsin as a particularly exciting vacation spot but Bayfield offers activity for all kinds of people. There is plenty more to do in Bayfield; the list above are just some of my favorites. I hope you are a lucky enough to visit what I consider to be one of the greatest towns.
