"And I know when that hotline bling, that can only mean one thing." The one thing is that I have something to do ASAP when my hotline blings.
When my work set up a phone and a Blackberry for me, I did not think much of it at first. I was not sure if the phones would be blowing up every other second or be dead. It was no surprise to me that they were going to be blowing up every other second. At least when I leave the office, I can leave the landline behind, but when I am walking out with my Blackberry there are times when I just want to chuck the phone into the Hudson River. I did have a close call with that though, unintentionally of course.
There are days when I think I am finally going to go home and be at peace relaxing, but I get e-mails I have to read and respond to, have files sent that I need to review, phone calls to follow up on and meetings to set up. The cellphone also comes with the most annoying cringeworthy ding that goes off every time I have a due date coming up, a meeting approaching or someone trying to call me. The dinging sound is the equivalence of that awful fingernails to chalkboard sound that made us cringe in school and sent shivers down our bodies and goosebumps to our arms.
I will say that it can be convenient to have your files and details of schedule all on one device. It is great to not have to remember everything and have a reliable device. Though I may be in a bit of a dilemma, if I do decide to catapult the phone into the Hudson River. Being able to read e-mails on train rides or respond when I have a spare second at home is nice because I don't go back to the office with a cluttered inbox and I am able have a sense about what progress has been made or what steps need to be taken next.
I give credit to the people who have their careers revolve around a little smartphone. It is not fun to have to spend time doing work outside the workplace. I can only imagine how many times their hotline blings in a day.
