When You Have An Older Brother

The ups and downs and the best relationship you can have.

When You Have An Older Brother
Bailey

There are many kinds of sibling relationships; Some are loving, some are distant, and some are based off of the fact that you know your Mom would be mad if you didn't keep in touch.Because I have brothers, sisters, older siblings and younger siblings, I know every kind of relationship siblings have. One of my favorite relationships is with my older brother.

The little sister - older brother relationship is a classic really. Its in movies and books and you see it just about everywhere. There are usually two ways this relationship goes.

The first one is the over protective older brother. He is the guy who stares into your prom dates eyes until he wants to cry and go home. He is the one that wants to know whose party you are going to and if there will be other boys there. He will also be the first car outside of the party waiting to pick you up afterward. He checks in your room to make sure you haven't managed to sneak out of the house, and if you did, he goes and finds you. He thoroughly enjoys answering the front door or the phone when he knows there is a timid little boy on the other side trying to talk to his little sister. He still tells me to this day that boys have cooties.

The second one is the best friend older brother. You know how it goes, the older brother that teaches you how to throw a football and you spend hours in the backyard together. You go to all of his sporting events and wear his jerseys because you are his biggest fan. You can go to him for anything, and I mean literally anything. You accidentally almost caught the house on fire? Well your older brother is there with a bowl of water that spills everywhere. You cut yourself with a knife? Screw an ER visit, your brother has some cotton balls and masking tape. You can tell him when you're having a bad day and he will take you out to get ice cream because he knows your weaknesses.

I am lucky enough to have both of these relationships with my older brother. I know that he will always be my biggest protector and my greatest fan. He wants to know how I did on my exams and he also wants to meet my boyfriends. He wants to take me out to dinner and wants to be standing in the "power man pose" when boys walk through the door. He is the dare devil older brother who takes me out on a motorcycle but then knows not to touch my hair when its done and touch my dress after he gets home from the shop.

I grew up on the sidelines with my brothers name and number on my back, telling the boys that come up to me in the stands that if they flirt with me, they will have to deal with my big brother.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
