When College Is Home

Sure, home is home too, but college is its own kind of home.

When College Is Home

This article goes out to anyone who's ever said that they were "going home" after break, or told their college friends they "couldn't wait to be home" with them, or anyone who a hundred percent feels like they live in two places at once (and let's face it, if you picked the right college for you, you most likely do).

1. Re-setting your Maps app so that it registers home as your college campus.

2. Seeing your campus entrance or landmark again and getting weirdly emotional.

3. Realizing just how quiet your room at home is without someone to talk to while you scroll through Instagram at night or while you blow-dry your hair.

4. Eating your first meal in the dining hall and remembering that it's pretty bad, but you wouldn't trade it for anything else.

5. Checking in on your favorite study spot and smiling (even though you won't be there for a little while, because syllabus week is a blessing).

6. Drinking your favorite drink from the campus coffeeshop that you've never been able to recreate at Starbucks or any other place at home.

7. Remembering that even though you love your family, your bed, and your kitchen, you also really love your college dorm life, and you wouldn't give it up for anything.

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Cambio

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
