"Mean Girls" is one of those irreplaceable movies that everybody knows about. While many girls can quote the entire film from heart, a lot of guys like myself usually don't know what they're talking about. Sure, most know it is why people wear pink on Wednesdays, but that's usually the extent of their knowledge. So with a bit of convincing, I got some guy friends who had never seen "Mean Girls" to watch it (Plus Joe, who is obsessed with the movie). We don't have a group name like The Plastics, but we decided to give it a shot and learn why this movie so special.
1. First Impression: any kid raised by the janitor from Scrubs has no chance of turning out normal.
2. Looking good Lindsay Lohan! Our knowledge of her starts at The Parent Trap and then skips straight to DUI's, jail, and stealing jewelry, so we'd never seen her look so pretty before.
3. We could actually relate to all her new student struggles. Who hasn't had lunch in the bathroom?
4. Hey, Tina Fey is in this movie! (turns out she wrote it) My 30 Rock-obsessed self definitely would've watched it earlier if I had known she was in it. Plus, she gives some genuinely great advice, and my favorite line of the movie.
5. Gretchen Wieners. We giggled more than we should have at that name.
6. Kieran admitted to asking people if they're white all the time.
7. We learned the rules of Girl World, except for the ex-boyfriend/girlfriend thing, that's universal.
8. Kevin Gnapoor was a very underrated character, we all loved him.
9. Our minds were blown when Regina pretended she loved that girl's skirt when she hated it. Girls really do that?
10. Playing dumb to impress a guy, please don't do it. Two member of our group had that happen to them, and it was just so weird. Smart is sexy girls.
11. The yellow school bus, though. Did not see that coming.
12. Unanimously-voted funniest moment:
(second place: everything Karen did).
All in all, could tell why this movie was so important. Besides being legitimately funny, "Mean Girls" had some great lessons in it to go with the endless lines we've heard girls (and Joe) quote through high school and college.
We agreed the whole thing was pretty fetch.
(My editor has informed me that I can't make fetch happen).
