When College Feels Like Too Much

Because we've all been there at one point or another.

When College Feels Like Too Much

To the student who feels like college is too much...

Unfortunately your day starts off with either; an annoying alarm waking you up, questioning how it can already be 8 am because you feel like you just fell asleep twenty minutes ago (maybe you actually did) or an inconsiderate roommate slamming drawers an hour before you even have to be awake. These scenarios within themselves are enough to make any person feel beat. As if that's not enough, you find yourself running from class to class, running low on energy, food, and inspiration.

No one really prepares you for college. They sort of give you some pamphlets with activities (which you'll barely have time for), show you movies such as Neighbors so you get an unrealistic expectation of social life and then send you on your way to conquer...well really, you're unsure of what you're conquering but you're expected to figure that out too. Some days you feel on top of the world, submitting Mastering Chem days before the due date and eating a salad for lunch. Other days, you plummet, sleeping through your 9 am and forgetting that breakfast is even a thing.

However, in my short time here, I have learned that college is truly all about the balance. Spending five hours in the library should be rewarded with a three hour nap, and those peanut butter cups you ate last night should probably be compensated by an hour spin class. College is all about finding your happy-medium. When you feel like college is too much, give yourself that break. Take a step back and find your relaxer. You are not meant exceed at every task, every day. Sure, that'd be nice, but highly unrealistic.

So to the student who feels like college is too much... you can do it. Even on your toughest days, remember that you can still achieve anything you set your mind to. Believing in yourself is half the battle. It's taken a lot of time to realize this. Half of the battles faced, in college, life, school, all can be conquered with the belief in yourself and the determination of "I can do it".

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
