When Big Goes Abroad

As told by pictures of my Big, abroad

When Big Goes Abroad
E. Shannon

"Big and Little we will always be!" That time of year has just recently passed; the gifts have been given, the hugs have been hugged, and the weird pictures of sorority girls popping out of boxes everywhere have flooded your Instagram feed. It is so sweet to see your sorority "family" expand, but it's not nearly as neat when that pyramid pic is just a little bit smaller than all the rest. My Big went abroad and is soaking up the European glory, but back here at home there's an empty spot in every sorority picture where her head would have fit perfectly. Oh, and an empty spot in my heart because I miss her so much!

My Big is one of my favorite people and best friends, so I hope that in reading this she knows how truly happy I am that she is having the time of her life! Em, your joy surpasses my both envious and sad states of missing you.

Here are things that happen when your big goes abroad. As told by pictures of my Big abroad.

1. You panic.

I have to go through my first recruitment alone? Who will tell me when my outfits look bad? Who will eat chocolate with me at 2 a.m.? What if I meet a cute boy? How will I know if I'm allowed to date the cute boy? These are the thoughts that haunt me.

2. You stress eat.

Even though you know the chocolate cake here in Texas is probably nothing compared to the chocolate cake in -- wherever this is. London? Prague? Rome? I never even know anymore. I can't keep up.

3. You FaceTime. Duh.

Except you still don't get to see the cities she's traveling because you don't get wifi at Windsor Castle, I guess. I do love getting to see the little pod of space she lives in and all, but getting to see her face rocks.

4. Sometimes you just...

They call it living vicariously, right?

(Me showing this to my children one day) "Ah, yes, this was when your Aunt Emily and I went to Italy! See? Pizza!"

5. You make this face. More than once.

There is nothing to be said for this. Except that I can't blame her; she basically lived a day in the life of Hermoine Granger that day.

6. You just choose to "let it be."

"Whisper words of wisdom..."

Man, I sure do miss this gal, but seeing her smile radiating in these pictures is making my countdown to the day we reunite just a little bit more bearable. I totally just used this as a backhand excuse to brag on how cute she is, but what else are littles for? Have a great last month traveling Europe, Blair Waldo -- I mean, Emily! You know you love me. Xoxo, Erica.

15 Times "Parks and Recreation" Summed Up Your Library Experience

"I've only slept nine hours over the past four days, so I'm right on the verge of a nervous breakdown." - Leslie Knope

Parks and Recreation excitedly gathered around a laptop at a table in an office setting.

The library. Club lib. The place every college student goes when they want to try and be a productive member of society. Who better to explain your experience than Parks and Rec?

1. When you've finally found the energy to leave your dorm room and walk into the lib like

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

A Few Thoughts Every College Freshman Has

The transition into adulthood is never easy

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

Students walking on a sunny college campus with trees and buildings.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
