The First Year Of College

Already a quarter of the way over, in the blink of an eye.

The First Year Of College

The first year of college went faster than four years of high school. Knowing that I am going to be a sophomore in college is more mind boggling then when I turned 18. Knowing that I accomplished a full year of college credits and that is behind my back just makes me that much happier that I accomplished something for myself. I did it. I survived the idea of moving out of my house, and living in my own dorm and living with someone I hardly knew.

Learning to balance school, working at a job, and the amount of Ramen I consume in a week. Knowing that the amount of time that it took to get through one of the biggest transitions of my life and only having less than ten crying fits. I call my mom every day and when I wouldn't call her, she would always text me and I would say "Oh yea I didn't call my mom today." The beginning of the year I had a giant group of friends. We did everything together.

We would eat together, hang out together and do movie nights every night. I mean, after all, we could choose our bedtime and didn't have any chores to do and can still choose when we want to get food or shower or do our own laundry. the most expensive thing that I have had to pay for is laundry. Those three dollars may seem like nothing to someone who is not in college and think that it is only enough for a bag of chips or a candy bar. But coming up with those three dollars is hard to do.

Because, after a while school food that looked so cool when I first got there, now is the same old food every day. And at times, I wanted to go out to dinner with my friends or eat at the restaurants on campus and in the beginning of each semester, I got dining dollars that I could use where ever I could at the restaurants or at the Starbucks. When I got here to school, I didn't have my parents hold my hand constantly or being able to pay for anything for me, even to tuck me in. I had to learn how to live on my own and eat my own food and make sure I had all my homework done for my classes. I didn't have my parents to talk to me and ask if I finished my assignments. I had to be responsible and finish my own homework.

I had to make sure that I did adult things and actually make my own bed and fold my freshly washed clothing. I remember hearing from some of my orientation leaders telling me that college goes by so much faster than high school and boy were they right. It feels like yesterday when I walked up the long hill that my parents parked on to walk up to orientation. Now I am a quarter of the way done with my college career and so ready for summer vacation.

This is for the girls who have dealt with an emotionally, mentally, physically or verbally abusive father.

The ones who have grown up with a false lens of what love is and how relationships should be. The ones who have cried themselves to sleep wondering why he hurts you and your family so much. This is for all the girls who fall in love with broken boys that carry baggage bigger than their own, thinking it's their job to heal them because you watched your mother do the same.

Blair Waldorf Quote
"DESTINY IS FOR LOSERS. IT'S JUST A STUPID EXCUSE TO WAIT FOR THINGS TO HAPPEN INSTEAD OF MAKING THEM HAPPEN." - BLAIR WALDORF.

The world stopped in 2012 when our beloved show "Gossip Girl" ended. For six straight years, we would all tune in every Monday at 9:00 p.m. to see Upper Eastside royalty in the form of a Burberry headband clad Blair Waldorf. Blair was the big sister that we all loved to hate. How could we ever forget the epic showdowns between her and her frenemy Serena Van Der Woodsen? Or the time she banished Georgina Sparks to a Christian summer camp? How about that time when she and her girls took down Bart Bass? Blair is life. She's taught us how to dress, how to be ambitious, and most importantly, how to throw the perfect shade.

We've all been there. From move-in day to the first finals week in college, your first term is an adventure from start to finish. In honor of college decisions coming out recently, I want to recap some of the most common experiences college freshmen experience.

1. The awkward hellos on move-in day.

You're moving your stuff onto your floor, and you will encounter people you don't know yet in the hallway. They live on your floor, so you'll awkwardly smile and maybe introduce yourself. As you walk away, you will wonder if they will ever speak to you again, but don't worry, there's a good chance that you will make some great friends on your floor!

Recently I completed my freshman year of college, and boy, what an experience. It was a completely new learning environment and I can't believe how much I learned. In an effort to save time, here are the ten biggest lessons I learned from my first year of college.

1. Everyone is in the same boat

For me, the scariest part of starting school was that I was alone, that I wouldn't be able to make any friends and that I would stick out. Despite being told time and time again that everyone had these same feelings, it didn't really click until the first day when I saw all the other freshman looking as uneasy and uncomfortable as me. Therefore, I cannot stress this enough, everyone is feeling as nervous as you.
