This past weekend, Oklahoma experienced its first ice storm of 2017, and unlike most states, the state of Oklahoma handles ice storms in a special kind of way. No matter what part of the state you are in, you will most definitely relate to the funny way Oklahomans act when the rain becomes ice.
1. Oklahomans surge the grocery stores for milk and bread.
I am not really sure why these two items are the most important when an ice storm heads in. If your power goes out the milk goes bad (unless you have almond milk).
2. Oklahomans avoid leaving the house at all costs.
3. Oklahomans close schools days in advance.
Before the ice or snow even comes down, if the weatherman makes it seem like the weather will be harsh, school is cancelled sometimes days in advance.
4. Oklahomans also close some businesses.
The same goes for businesses, especially smaller ones. Which makes since sense everyone avoids leaving their homes.
5. Oklahomans drive very slow, even if nothing is on the ground.
It never seems to fail. Even if nothing is happening, people will suddenly drive worse because of the possibility of persipitation. When it does finally storm, it is almost impossible to deal with Oklahoma drivers. Good thing most of them stay home.
6. Oklahomans worry about the safety of others who feel comfortable leaving the home.
For us that brave the "storm", we get a lot of concern from our loved ones. What is a life that doesn't involve risk though?
7. Cherry-picker trucks travel to Oklahoma from all around the nation in hundreds.
This year, the cherry-picker trucks where lined up in our mall parking lots. They went beyond the eye could see. Word is some of the trucks came from as far as Tennessee.
8. Oklahomans buy generators when the weather man says anything about possible power outages.
I used to work at Sears a few years ago, and anytime snow or ice came down so did our stock of generators. Everyone wanted them when they were all gone.
9. Oklahomans overreact sometimes.
Enough said.
10. In Oklahoma, if there is predicted icy weather, the entire state goes into a state of emergency.
It has been like this all weekend and I haven't seen ice yet.
11. The weather channel is always interrupting your favorite shows.
I just want to watch the Bold and the Beautiful and the Price Is Right, gosh.
12. The weatherman becomes the most respected man in the state.
If you are from Oklahoma, then you know who this guy is. Gary England, one of the most famous and successful weatherman in Oklahoma.
