Pepsi recently released, then deleted, a new commercial that has been extremely controversial within the past few days. The commercial featured model Kendall Jenner and a peace protest. Jenner joined the people who were walking in this peace protest and you can see that everyone is from different ethnic backgrounds. At the end of the commercial, Jenner sees a cop staring at the people protesting and she hands him a can of Pepsi. This cop goes on to take the pepsi, drink it and then smiled. Everyone in the streets began to cheer and dance, including Jenner.
After this commercial was released, a lot of people started to critic it and say that it was disrespectful. A lot of people took to Twitter and Facebook to disagree with this and even made memes making fun of it. Pepsi later deleted the video and put out this statement: “Pepsi was trying to project a global message of unity, peace and understanding. Clearly we missed the mark, and we apologize.”
I have to say, I disagree with the people on social media who took this commercial wrong. Within the past few years, there are constantly stories in the news about hate crimes, un-peaceful protests, police brutality, racism, and other conflicts that are centered around hatred. As a society of people who want change, shouldn't we be happy that someone finally stood up and showed what the world should actually look like? I applaud Pepsi for recognizing where we are as a country and where we should be. I don't think that the message they were trying to get out there was that Pepsi can solve everyones issues or a model can make everything better. I think the message was that we should all be united and come together.
When Jenner handed the cop the soda and everyone started to cheer, I think the idea was that there should be no racism or police brutality. We should all understand one another and not fear each other. These issues have caused deaths, violence and outrage especially in the past few years so I don't see the problem with Pepsi addressing it and saying there should be a change.
