Here's What's Wrong With Today's College Spring Break Culture

Spring break doesn't have to be a time you only wish you could remember.

Here's What's Wrong With Today's College Spring Break Culture
Steven Madigan

For all too many of us, spring break in college is synonymous with a week of substance-fueled debauchery in sunny, tropical places. It's a week to remember that many of us can't. The draw to Destin, Cabo, and Cancun is a strong one. Think, though, if that's really what you want.

I've never been one to indulge in spring break trips to the beaches with my friends. For me, it's the only real break I get all year. I work full-time and take classes through the summer, so the thought of having months off to look forward to is nothing more than a high school memory. I've always been the odd-man-out in the "spring break" GroupMe, but looking back, I have no regrets.

My idea of the perfect spring break isn't the typical one for people our age. Rather than surrounding myself with people, I prefer to be as far away from them as possible. I'm a big believer in the power of relaxation, and personally, I prefer to spend my break as far-removed from the stresses of daily life as possible. I treat spring break as a rare chance to get away from everything — so why spend it in the middle of everything?

Whatever you're doing for spring break, take a few minutes to think about why you're doing it. Are you simply following the herd, or are you chasing a goal that you've set for yourself? The goal doesn't have to be anything concrete — but if you're simply following the flock, what are you gaining? For me, spring break is a time to cool down. It's time to get away from the stress of work and school. I try to put as much physical and mental ground between those stresses and myself as possible. It's only a week, make the most of it!

Challenge yourself to find a goal. If you're heading south to the sunny shores, make the most of every day. You only have a week, make it count! If you're staying on campus or near home, take a break from your classes. You need it, and your professors do too! The year isn't over, so don't take to too easy, but midterms are over. You're in the home stretch. Take a week off, reset your mind, and finish strong!

5 Things To Do That Are Better Than Writing A Paper

Don't waste your time trying to write that paper when there are so many more interesting things you could be doing.

Writing a paper is never fun and is rarely rewarding. The writer's block, the page requirement, be specific, but don’t summarize, make sure you fixed any grammatical errors, did you even use spellcheck? and analyze, analyze, analyze.

Papers can be a major pain. They take up so much time and effort that by the end of the process you hate yourself and you hate the professor for making life so difficult. Questions of your existence start roaming in your mind. Am I even cut out for college if I can’t write a single paper? Am I even capable of taking care of myself if I lack the energy to open my laptop and start typing?

I can barely remember back when I was the only child. Most would say it’s because it is extremely difficult to remember things as a toddler but I would say it's because I was bored until my sister came along. My mother always says how important the "sister bond" is and with every year that passes I realize how right she is. Instead of writing a novel about all of the wonderful things there are about having a sister I decided to list a few of them instead.

It is the time of our lives that we are beginning to enter the adult world and most of us, if not all of us, have no idea what we are doing. It's like starting a video game, but skipping the tutorial. We're all just running around aimlessly hoping we accidentally do something right that moves us along the right path. Now that graduation has just happened, or is right around the corner for some of us, it's time to start thinking about how we are going to take care of ourselves once we are on our own.

If you’re anything like me, you love a good cup of coffee. My coffee always comes from Starbucks; I refuse to drink it from anywhere else. Over the years, it’s become one of my biggest addictions. So, if you are aware that you’re a Starbucks addict as well, or maybe you need to check to see if you’re an addict, here are seven ways to tell.

College involves a whirlwind of emotions, whether it’s from the stress of an assignment (or twenty), or from fighting with your roommate. It can be overwhelming at times and it’s important to take a step a back and calmly think things over. Maybe gain some perspective.
