The new Netflix original 13 Reasons Why has gotten a lot of attention, both good and bad. I personally love how real the show is. People I know, including myself, have experienced the events that have happened on the show. I love how people are finally able to see the reality of high school, especially parents who don't always believe their kids about the hallway horrors.
However, I am going to agree with the criticizers because the show does make Hannah's suicide more appealing. No one ever cared about her or the stuff she was going through until she was killed off and sent the tapes. She gained a lot of attention and people, more specifically Clay, started feeling more regretful. People who are contemplating suicide may opt for the dreadful decision because they want people to feel bad for being bullies.
The show is gives me mixed feelings. I believe it is important for schools and adults to realize how mean kids can be. I think watching this show can allow parents to accept and talk to their kids about what is actually happening to them. Recently, my parents got an email warning them to not let me watch the show. I thought this was horrible. Are schools just trying to cover up for the fact that this show actually shows the truth about what happens in high schools?
There is nothing inapropriate about the truth. Also, with finals week rolling around everyone is really stressed and fights are breaking out much more often. Schools are asking their students to take the fights off campus. Do they just not want the school to look bad? I think authority figures need to watch the show and take more steps. Try to make students think that they care instead of upholding a reputation. No one's going to care about a reputation if you lose one of your own students.
I agree that the show makes suicide appealing and doesn't delve deep enough into each of the harmful things that happen to Hannah. I hope that with a second season the show will be able to explore this a little more. However, if you are really contemplating suicide, don't make this show a deciding factor. Hannah, although aggressively bullied, still had people in her life that loved her immensly. Focus on that aspect of the show and find those people in your own life. Hannah is just one of the many heartbreaking stories, don't make it your reality.
