It seems like all of a sudden, the relatively new app 'Tiktok' has taken over social media. Formerly known as 'Musically', the app rebranded itself and took on the name 'Tiktok' late 2018. The app has become a huge part of the lives of millennial and generation z's — with some baby boomers even creating profiles on the app as of recent.
Other than the fact that many celebrities have created profiles on the app within these past few months, Tiktok also has its own set of influencers now as well. Charlo D'amelio, Chase Hudson, Tony Lopez and Addison Rae to name a few. These influencers have huge followings — up to 20 million in some cases.
But what is so special about this social media platform? For many around my age, the short-video nature of the app brings back nostalgic memories of Vine. However, being able to add captions and music to the background of the videos is what sets it apart from other social media platforms. There is a special element of 'dark humor' that comes with Tiktok. This attracts many generation z kids as it is something that trends within our generation.
On Tiktok, anyone can be a creator. From artists, to food critiques, to animal enthusiasts and even medical professionals. Users are now beginning to use the app to spread important information to young people. Not only is this app fun, but it has the power to be extremely educational as well. For example, the other day I saw a Tiktok from a psychologist's account about healthy ways to communicate with roommates.
On the surface, this app may seem quite trivial. However, I have come to realize that people are using it as a creative outlet for expression and using it to spread important information for all.
