Oh, Valentine's Day. The day that some people receive life-size teddy bears and chocolates, or celebrate by having an Anti-Valentine's Day Party. No matter who you are, I'm sure you have some opinions on this holiday.
I remember in elementary school receiving Valentines from everyone in my class, and LOTS of candy. I would decorate a shoebox that took several hours make pretty and still end up looking like a shoebox. We would have an all-day party in class with heart cookies, punch, and so much chocolate.
Now that I am older and in college, Valentine's Day has a different meaning. Sadly, I don't get to decorate a shoebox anymore or receive Valentine's from school. I'm not the biggest fan of Valentine's Day, and this is not just because I'm single. We should be treating our significant others with love and respect every day, not just on this holiday.
I asked some of my friends from school their opinions on Valentine's Day, single and in relationships, and they had similar opinions.
Haylee Uptergrove, who just got ENGAGED, (yay), said it's a "sweet day to focus on your relationship, but you should be putting in the effort every day."
Andrew Marks, a senior at Tech, echoed her sentiments. He said he thinks that while there's nothing wrong with the holiday itself, sometimes people go overboard.
"I think it's overblown and taken too far," Marks said. "People should be nice to their significant other every day, not just Valentine's Day."
R.C. Maxfield, also a student at Tech, said he agrees with Marks and Uptergrove: "You don't need a Hallmark holiday to celebrate the ones you love."
Still, there are those who appreciate Valentines Day as a day where it may be okay to go a little overboard. Brandon Medina, a journalism major at Tech, said he thinks it's alright to spoil your significant other, even if just for a day.
"Valentine's day," he said, "is a day you should look forward to if you aren't able to usually spend money on your loved one."
While these are just a few opinions on Valentine's Day, I'd say that everyone has different ideas on this specific holiday. Whether you like it or not, Valentine's Day will always be around. It's the holiday we love to hate.
