What's Your Sign?

A look at astrological stereotypes.

What's Your Sign?
astrological signs guide

For many centuries, people have been fascinated by astrology. Everyone has checked their horoscope at some point. I know good and well that if I saw a post describing the signs as dish soaps, I would have to scroll back up and see which one my sign was. Of course, those who study astrology know that there is a lot more to it than popularly believed. That is why I sat down with avid astrology scholar Rosie McClendon to discuss astrological signs and their stereotypes

Aquarius (January 20-February 18)

Stereotype: People who are Aquarius are thought to be crazy, afraid of the government, aluminum hat-wearing weirdos with god complexes

Rosie says: Aquarius wants to see every side of everything. People who are Aquarius love diversity and want to be inclusive of everyone in a given group. They are very intelligent so they question everything.

Pisces (February 19- March 20)

Stereotype: Pisces are always intoxicated and can not deal with their problems.

Rosie says: Pisces usually do not get much sleep, are often lost in thought, and have good imaginations.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

Stereotype: Aries are selfish, mad at the world and like to fight.

Rosie says: Aries do have a short temper. They are also natural born leaders who know how to bring about change. Aries are loyal and stick up for their friends

Taurus (April 20- May 20)

Stereotype: Taurus are thought to be stubborn and boring.

Rosie says: Taurus are persistent and stand up for their beliefs. They are simple, low-key people who like for everyone to be comfortable.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

Stereotype: (Largely thanks to "Tumblr Astrology") Gemini are two-faced and generally the devil incarnate.

Rosie says: First of all, they are not the devil. Gemini have complex, multi-faceted personalities that can be on both ends of the social spectrum, ergo "twin" personalities. This is why many may perceive them as being two-faced.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

Stereotype: Cancers are moody babies who cry a lot.

Rosie says: Cancers are moody and crabby out of fear of getting hurt. They are sensitive and often come across as harsh as a defense mechanism.

Leo (July 23-August 22)

Stereotype: Leos are stuck up divas. They think that they are royalty, and that they are better than everyone.

Rosie says: Leos are confident. They like to look good and know when they look good. Leo owns the room!

Virgo (August 23-September 22)

Stereotype: Virgos are pretentious neat freaks and perfectionists who love to complain.

Rosie says: Virgos are healers who like to solve problems and fix or improve upon things and situations, which can result in them being critical.

Libra (September 23-October 22)

Stereotype: Libras are non-confrontational, flaky and don't stand up for themselves.

Rosie says: Libras do not like to fight, but they highly value justice and will stick up for their friends. Libras are very social, which may cause them to forget about certain plans.

Scorpio (October 23-November 21)

Stereotype: Scorpios are promiscuous and morbid.

Rosie says: Scorpios are emotionally guarded and are only intimate with people they trust. They are fearless and have an it-is-what-it-is attitude towards life, which causes them to embrace the darker aspects of life rather than fear them.

Sagittarius (November 22-December 21)

Stereotype: Sagittariuses are blunt and noncommittal hippies.

Rosie: They are very blunt. Sagittarius thinks that life is too short to sugar coat the truth. They are also perceived as having commitment issues because they are too busy living life to the fullest to settle down.

Capricorn (December 22-January 19)

Stereotype: Capricorns are standoffish, unemotional, power-hungry workaholics.

Rosie says: Capricorns are not unemotional. They are simply very good at control of their emotions. They are career-oriented and place their careers first but have other priorities as well.

I asked if there was anything else people generally get wrong when it comes to astrology. "There are two types of astrology: Western, (which we are familiar with) and Vedic. People try to compare the two, and that's how they disprove astrology. You can't look at an orange and say 'That's not an apple!' There is more to astrology than than just sun signs; you may identify more with your moon or rising sign," says Rosie. "Finally, astrology is fluid. It's a spectrum. People born on cusps may behave more like the signs that they cusp."

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week.
