Hotel Del Coronado.
When you hear that name you think of endless family vacations, beautiful weather, and a place to get away from the daily routine.
This hotel has been a staple in many Americans lives and throughout generations, and has remained a place of historic value to everyone who walks through the lobby doors. Recently, the Hotel was sold to a Chinese insurance company.
This is astounding.
An American staple that has provided a place for so many people has been given to people that do not understand the true value of this historical building. This has been a place where United States history has flourished so why would a company and group of people that know nothing about this historical place take over?
The company acquired Hotel Del Coronado for 6.5 billion dollars as part of a large deal.
Coronado is home to countless United State Service Men and Woman. The area is screaming United States, so why is it that foreign people can take over a place that is so close to many Americans hearts? Coronado is home to the Navy Seal Training, and one of the top 10 beaches consistently in the United States. It is also home to the world's first electrically- lighted Christmas tree unveiling in December 1904.Having foreigners take over a Hotel that is so iconic to the American people leaves many angry and confused.
Hotel Del has United States history seeping through its walls. The hotel is the oldest wood structure in the US and the Electric wiring was done by Thomas Edison. In an article on People Edison’s work is explained:
At the time it was the most extensive wiring job west of New York City, and there were justifiable fears that the patrons might have difficulty adjusting to the new technology. Signs posted in every room informed guests, "This room is equipped with the Edison Electric Light. Do not attempt to light with a match."
These grounds exemplify the true meaning of United States History. You name it; it has probably happened at the Hotel Del.
Not only does this concern many travelers who spend most of their summers in this beautiful place, but it also affects the local Coronado citizens. Benefits that locals were once gifted from the hotel have gone out the window.
Coronado Councilman Bill Sandke said, that he does not believe there will be any crucial changes made to the hotel under new ownership in an article on Coronado Patch.
Giving new ownership to such a highly sought after property to foreign people is very risky. Only time will tell if this can actually prove to be something for the better.
Instinct says otherwise.
