What's So Major About Majors?
California State University, Montery Bay

You just graduated high school and all of your friends are "sure" of what they will major in.

Finding yourself in this situation can be really overwhelming and it can make you feel lost. At the beginning of May we are expected to raise our hands to be excused to go to the restroom, yet at the beginning of June we are expected to have our futures mapped out. To the people going to school this fall with an undecided major...You are not broken. You are not wrong. You are not indecisive.

Declaring a major is well...major. It can be really overwhelming to know that a check mark on a piece of paper determines the path your life will take. Don't feel like you have to declare a set major before you even start your freshman year of college. Some people just know what they are passionate about, and for those people it is a lot less difficult to declare their major.

Do not feel alone. I assure you that there are so many more people in the same position as you!

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, About 80 percent of students in the United States end up changing their major at least once.

That's right...you read that correctly. At least once. So get out there. Explore. Find what you are passionate about because nobody wants to get up and work in a field that their heart is not in. Experience the world and all it has to offer! Also, do not, I repeat do not be afraid to change your major. Though you may have taken a few classes in vain, or maybe you even have to pick up some extra courses, It will be worth it in the long run.

Also, people who have declared majors early, there is nothing wrong with knowing where you are going. I myself knew what major I wanted to declare from the time I was ten. Just remember, if you have declared your major, and you know someone who has not, please do not look at them as if they have no plan for their lives. Not all who wander are lost. If you have a major that you are passionate in then maybe offer a little insight to them on why you are majoring in that field.

Here is to the undelcared and undecided! I commend you on going to college to further your education without knowing what your major will be. The world is full of possibilities. Do not worry about the stigma surrounding your decision! College is what discovering yourself is all about, while learning and meeting fantastic people along the way.

And to the declared and decided, remember to always keep your mind open to new possibilities! You never really know for sure what you want to do until you are educated on the subject! Follow your heart and be passionate about your career!

In the words of GWF Hegel "Nothing great in the world has ever been accomplished without passion..."

Being a part of any organization undoubtedly comes with the pitfalls of being grouped into negative stereotypes, and sororities are certainly no exception. Here are the top few things, that I find at least, are some of the most irritating misconceptions that find their way into numerous conversations...

8. "The whole philanthropy thing isn't real, right?"

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
