What's Happened To The News

The news is a great media outlet, but is it well-rounded?

The first form of news that was ever considered news was word of mouth and the newspaper. This was back before iPhones, computers, social media and televisions were even thought of being invented. One neighbor would tell another neighbor something relevant that was happening in their town that day, and when they read the paper they would be able to find out other current events happening in the world around them.

But, over the years, since the world has become more modern and developed technology, something about the news and the way it is presented to people has changed. Don’t get me wrong; when cell phones, computers, TVs and better printing presses were created, it became so much easier for people to be able to obtain information about things that were happening locally and anywhere else. Although, something does not seem completely the same as when we first developed all of this technology.

With the ever-gaining popularity of social media and TV shows that present and talk about things that are going on in the world, some of the news people see seems fabricated. The whole world is becoming scared of going places and doing things because of the bad things going on in the world (that the news presents to us). The issue I find is that, while these things are real and real problems are happening, it is all the news is focusing on. With the news focusing on all the negative things in the world, I don’t blame people for freaking out.

The point I am trying to get across is to not freak out. The modern news companies and media outlets seem to put all this focus on something in order to get a reaction and boost their ratings. The news they are presenting is real, but they are finding evidence and facts in order to make something seem dangerous too, say, someone in New York when something bad is happening in Los Angeles. It is all they’re focusing on when they could attempt to have a more balanced palette incorporating some of the good things that are happening also.

The world is becoming less peaceful than the previous decades, it seems. But the question is, was all this stuff happening to the same extent in past decades and we just didn’t have the technology to tell people about it? Or is the world actually as dangerous as the media and news present it to be?

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
