History is being made at Standing Rock, North Dakota, and no one seems to be taking notice. Over 250 Native American tribes are joining forces to peacefully protest the Dakota Access Pipeline which would jeopardize the Missouri River that runs through the Standing Rock Sioux reservation and would pose a serious threat to the water supply for future generations.
The conflict at Standing Rock has only just come to light with some recent news coverage, especially when actress Shailene Woodley live-streamed her arrest at Standing Rock on Facebook.
Here's the issue: the 1,172-mile-long pipeline would run through several sacred sites for the Standing Rock Sioux tribe. It would transport between 470,000 and 570,000 barrels of crude oil every day, and it would also put the sacred water at serious risk because it's not a question of if the pipeline would burst, but when.
All protesters at Standing Rock have been peaceful, but they have only been met with violent police retaliation in return. The brave protesters at Standing Rock are fighting everyone's fight. They aren't just standing for their sacred water, but they are also taking a stand against fossil fuels, big corporations, climate change and everything that the pipeline stands for.
Standing Rock has become more than a fight. It has become a movement. The courageous water protectors are fighting tirelessly for human and environmental rights, and they need help. Trump's administration is already gearing up to finish the pipeline. Spread the word and support. Stand with Standing Rock! #NoDAPL.
