So, maybe you've heard a bit about that weird sci-fi show "Doctor Who" but don't really get it. Or perhaps you have never even heard of the show. Either way, the first thing you need to know is that the show centers around the main character, the Doctor, and his time-traveling adventures.
1. The TARDIS is basically the Doctor's time-travel machine
"TARDIS" is short for "time and relative dimension in space." This machine is bigger on the inside than the outside. It's been cleverly disguised as a blue police box just a few feet wide, but inside is a place with infinite rooms. It's size can be explained by "dimensional transcendentalism," meaning the interior of the TARDIS is on a different dimension than the outside. The TARDIS is used to both travel in time and travel in space. To quote the Doctor: "So... all of time and space, everything that ever happened or ever will - where do you want to start?" Now, you may be wondering, who's this "Doctor" guy anyway?
2. The Doctor is an alien, specifically a Time Lord
And there are twelve of them, but really there is only one. Basically, this character is from the planet called "Gallifrey" where the humanoid species called "Time Lords" exist. Time Lords regenerate when they are severely injured or about to die. This process recreates all the body's cells, therefore completely changing the way the Doctor looks. So, the Doctor is always the Doctor, but his looks vary. He is hundreds of years old and calls himself "the last of the Time Lords." He travels all of time and space, often alongside his companions.
3. Companions are the Doctor's friends who travel with him
Along the way of his adventures, the Doctor stumbles across a variety of people who later become his companions and travel with him for some time. More often than not, the companion is a female, but sometimes a male companion serves as one of the core companions. Clara, one of the Doctor's companions once questioned the Doctor's choosing of friends by saying, "Is this actually what you do? Do you just crook your finger and people just jump in your Snog Box and fly away?" To which the Doctor replied, "It is not a Snog Box!"
4. The Doctor has a lot of enemies
After traveling time and space for hundreds of years, you're bound to rack up some enemies along the way. There are a lot of people, creatures, and even robots who have a strong dislike for the Doctor and will often try to destroy him. One of the most recognizable and recurring of the show's enemies are the Daleks. Daleks are creatures living in vessels that have eye-stalks, plunger-like arms, and whisk-looking weapons that shoot lasers.
5. The Doctor often saves the world and the universe
The Doctor has saved countless lives countless times. He has solved ghost stories where just a couple people were at risk to stopping an invasion of Cybermen from taking over Earth. Often, he goes into a situation without a plan and just wings it as the plan progresses. However, he does it brilliantly with the help of his companions. So, what are you waiting for? Start watching "Doctor Who" now to save the universe and go on adventures with the Doctor.
