What's Art Got to Do With It?

The Importance of Art in Contemporary Society

What's Art Got to Do With It?

Everything that has ever existed has existed because someone had the passion to want to create something new. Les Paul wanted to invent a new type of guitar, Vincent Van Gogh wanted to paint the kinds of blues he saw in the sky and William Shakespeare had many different stories buzzing around in his head and wanted to tell all of them. My point is that art (in any shape or form) is important to the furthering of humanity. In contemporary society, art can sometimes be seen as unnecessary or a waste of time and resources, but that is a lie that should not be believed in the slightest because art has such an impact on everything, not just those who can afford to view it, but those who have the desire to see it and create something even better.

Even in fields not associated with art such as technology can be seen through a certain lens as art. I’ve known many people who are in love with their cars and going to car shows. To them, that is art. The way the wax shines off of the hood of that 1964 Mustang could very well bring a tear to the eye of quite a few enthusiasts. When Steve Jobs brought the iPhone to the world, he brought a piece of artwork that could fit in the palm of his hand, but it could also create new things. It could edit the pictures that you take and then app designers burst into reality. The artists designing their dream in the form of an app. Something that they’ve created. It’s art.

When I write poetry or my short stories, I don’t do it because I want to be published (although that is nice), I do it so that I can create something with my own hands. I can take an idea that I’ve had in my mind and transfer it to the page so that I may connect with other people in the world. I can connect using my words so that I may help someone else, someone who may need to hear that someone else is also dealing with the same things that they’re also dealing with. That connection is pure and it belongs to me. To any artist or author or musician.

Art can be seen by many as something that belongs in a museum so that the bourgeoisie can go on a lazy afternoon and peruse the latest at the Museum of Modern Art, but art surrounds us and engulfs us. No matter what we do in life, if we have any sort of drive or focus in life, we will create something. Some kind of product, film or song we will be creating and furthering the world for the better. We are now more advanced than we were before your creation. Keep that drive and go out into the world and create something that you’re proud of. Don’t worry about people not liking it or not getting any money from it. That creation is yours and no one can ever take that away.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

eye roll

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"

While this question trend can get annoying, there are a couple of pros to having RBF.

Yify

Another day, another Elle Woods comment. Can’t us blondes get through the day without someone harping at us over the typical stereotypes about who we are? I never understood why a person was judged based upon the hair color they were born with, or the hair color they choose to have (unless you dye your hair blue like Kylie Jenner, I’m still trying to understand why that’s a trend). Nevertheless, as it should be assumed, not everyone is the same. Not all blondes like bright colors and Lilly Pulitzer, and not all blondes claim to identify with Marilyn Monroe. I think the best suggestion to give to people before they make such radical claims is to stop judging a book by its cover. Or in this case, stop judging a blonde by her hair color.
