What Is Dance?

Diary of a dancer

What Is Dance?
Kira Stallworth

"What if you could never dance again?"

That is a question I still do not know the answer to.

Most people believe that dancing is just a hobby, and believe it has no place in a world of realistic careers. Dancing is not unrealistic or a hobby, but it is a passion. Most people only see a performer on stage, although I see: hard work, dedication, talent, and passion that refuses to die. A lot is expected from a dancer, and society tends to dismiss it. Dancers have to be smart, they have to absorb choreography, they must execute the dances well, and they must have their own personality that is expressed through every performance. Dance requires a person to have an excellent work ethic as well as a drive to complete it. It is easy for a dancer to cease their activity, and find an alternative. What is it that keeps dancers going? Their will to continue, and their passion to grow.

The one aspect that all great dancers possess is the passion to dance. Having a passion allows dancers to gain new opportunities and become better. For example, Maddie Ziegler from "Dance Moms," has won trophy after trophy and has created a name for herself. She had passion instilled in her ever since she was a four year old girl and is currently booking jobs left and right. People can see the difference in a dancer that loves what they do versus a dancer that is only going through the motions. Passionate dancers are the best performers and are breath-taking when they step out on stage. An audience can sense how much heart a dancer has put into their performance. A passionate dancer is what captivates an audience and makes them want to see more performances.

Dance is such a beautiful art form, and has left its mark in the field of entertainment. Dance is not just a form of entertainment, it is a feeling. When I dance, even to music in my room, a feeling comes over me that words fail to successfully describe. I am taken to a different place when I move to music. I feel no longer apart of the real world, but in the perfection of my own. I love to dance, and my passion comes to life through every motion. Dance has a form for every emotion trapped in my mind, but it all escapes when the music is turned on. Whether I feel aggressive, upset, sassy, confident, smooth, or etc., I will still have a dance to illustrate how I feel. My favorite form of dance is hip hop, and that alone expresses me just fine. When I dance I give it my all, and no one can stop me from expressing myself. My dance has a voice, a personality, a story that is told through my movements. An audience can get a sense of my attitude, and predict my personality through what I give them on stage. It does not matter where i am. It does not matter if I am in a dance studio, in my room, on the bus, in the car, on stage, or anywhere I go. I am going to dance, and the world will get to know me, one step at a time.

27 Things 'The Office' Has Taught Us

"The Office" is a mockumentary based on everyday office life featuring love triangles, silly pranks and everything in between. It can get pretty crazy for just an average day at the office.

When you were little, your parents probably told you television makes your brain rot so you wouldn't watch it for twelve straight hours. However, I feel we can learn some pretty valuable stuff from television shows. "The Office," while a comedy, has some pretty teachable moments thrown in there. You may not know how to react in a situation where a co-worker does something crazy (like put your office supplies in jello) but thanks to "The Office," now you'll have an idea how to behave ifsomething like that should happen.

Here are just a few of the things that religious Office watchers can expect to learn.

Being pre-med is quite a journey. It’s not easy juggling school work, extracurricular activities, volunteering, shadowing, research, and MCAT prep all at the same time. Ever heard of “pain is temporary, but GPA is forever?” Pre-meds don’t just embody that motto; we live and breathe it. Here are 10 symptoms you’re down with the pre-med student syndrome.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

Books were always about understanding for me, about learning the way someone else sees, about connection.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

I keep making this joke whenever the idea of books is brought up: "God, I wish I knew how to read." It runs parallel to another stupid phrase, as I watch my friends struggle through their calculus classes late at night in our floor lounge: "I hope this is the year that I learn to count." They're both truly idiotic expressions, but, when I consider the former, I sometimes wonder if there's some truth to it.

One Book Made Me Question Existence In Its Entirety

"The Stranger" by Albert Campus touches upon many heavy elements... but not in the way you expect. Although it touches upon the aspects of death and love, it also deals with a hidden philosophy similar to that of nihilism.

The story follows the short life events of Meursault, a Frenchman whose carelessness for his actions eventually ends him in jail and dependent on a jury of people to judge the ethicality of his decision and the punishment that he deserves. He eventually gets the death penalty and all throughout he is nonchalant and almost apathetic towards his situation. He finally snaps when the prison sends a priest to him to absolve him of his sins and to cajole him in confessing to the lord.
