I want to be an...Ice skater! No wait, a veterinarian because I really love my dog. No, I actually want to be a doctor.. or maybe a chef. The answers were endless when we were children and we were asked that famous question "What do you want to be when you grow up?". As we grow older though, the answers change. We go from believing that we can become a doctor, or maybe even the next president to "I don't know" or "I'm not sure what I am even good at". Where did we stop believing in ourselves? Why did we stop dreaming so big? To figure out what you want to be in life you first need to stop being so scared and start working towards your goals and dreams. I promise you I was just as scared as senior year of high school rolled around and I had to start looking at colleges and looking into my future and what I wanted to be when I grew up. Three simple questions really helped me figure out what I wanted to be.
What Do You Like?
Surprisingly enough, you have to like what you do when you grow up. So the most basic question to ask is; what are the things that you like to do, and what makes you happy? For me, I really enjoyed science classes growing up, and I also enjoyed making other people happy too. So I had to narrow it down to what career paths would lead me to doing those two things.
Are You Good At Those Things?
Just because I like singing along to the songs on the radio, doesn't mean that I am actually good at singing. We can enjoy doing a lot of things but not actually be good at it. This is where self confidence plays a huge part, and having the courage to ask people to be honest with you. Do not be afraid to ask people what your strengths are, and if you are good at the things you are passionate about. Also don't be afraid to pray to God for these answers, He will guide you to the right decision. It is important to do what you like, but just as important to be good at it so you can succeed.
Do You Know How Your Job Will Help Other People?
Your degree is not for you. Well, to an extent. How will what you do in life help others? Is what your doing for yourself, and your own financial gain? Or is it bringing love and goodness into the world. There are people that need us out there, they need firefighters, policemen, teachers, nurses, doctors, therapists, and the list can go on and on. Are you ready to understand that your degree will not only be for you, but for those who hurt and are in need of your help? You need to believe that what you want to do in life is going to be truly amazing and bring so much into the world than what you can imagine. You need to be ready to work for what you want to be and understand how your future job will help other people.
