Even the most optimistic person can’t be happy all the time. Eventually, the trials of day-to-day life will make anybody feel down at least some of the time. Some days we just need to know we are loved, not alone, or even just to know we are going to be okay.
Thankfully, God is always willing to remind us of what is true. He sees when we are discouraged. He understands when life gets hard. He wants to strengthen us when it feels like we can’t take another step. He helps us in many ways, but one of the most important is through the gift of his word.
In the most famous of Psalms, we find these words: “Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever” (Ps. 23:6). In my darkest of times I have found myself reading this verse, but just here recently when I have read it over and over one little phrase stood out to me: “All the days of my life.” Take in acknowledgement it doesn’t say, “On happy, easy days your goodness and love will follow me,” or, “On days when everything goes the way I want, your goodness and love will follow me.” We are told that God’s goodness and love will be with us every day. On the day we fail a big exam. On the day it feels like depression is winning. On the day the unexpected happens. On the day we lose someone we love. These are all perfect examples of times God will not only help us on all our days, but also in all our struggles. No problem is too big or too small for his affection or attention.
It is very east to look around and say to ourselves, “My troubles don’t matter compared to what everyone else in the world is facing.” But the God who numbers every hair on our heads and knows every care in our hearts is concerned about each and every detail of our lives. That means whether you’re going through a major crisis, just the ups and downs of everyday life, or whatever may come your way, living with God we really can live with hope, strength, and joy in all our days no matter the circumstances.
This got deep, I know. I hope you stuck with me through it all. I write this because sometimes you need a little reminder that God is still there putting in the work to make things right for you again no matter how far you may have fallen or how silent you think He has become. He trumps all things, trusting in him is just the first step to climbing that uphill battle.
“When doubts fill my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer” Psalms 94:19
