"The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown." -H.P. Lovecraft
Is it possible to live life completely fearlessly? Out of genuine curiosity, I asked 19 people of various ages and genders what their biggest fear was and recorded their answers; what I've concluded is that many people of the same age have very similar fears, even if they come from completely different backgrounds.
1. Male- 22: "Going to battle."
2. Female- 20: "Something happening to my family."
3. Male- 21: "Not living up to my potential."
4. Female- 19: "Being in a plane crash."
5. Male- 15: "Being chased while I'm walking at night."
6. Female- 20: "Infertility."
7. Male- 44: "Something happening to me and my family is not taken care of."
8. Female- 20: "Being sexually assaulted."
9. Male- 19: "Not going to Heaven."
10. Female- 20: "Infertility."
11. Male- 59: "My wife or kids dying."
12. Female- 53: "Lack of financial security in retirement."
13. Female- 20: "Infertility."
14. Male- 21: "Never getting married."
15. Female- 57: "No financial security in retirement."
16. Female- 20: "Infertility."
17. Male- "Not living life to its fullest."
18. Female- 19: "Never getting married."
19. Female- 31: "Losing a child."
When I asked these people what they were afraid of, most knew the answer almost instantly. I found that what you're afraid of can tell you a lot about your priorities- if your fear is losing somebody in your life, hug them a little tighter today. If your fear is not living enough life, do something you've always wanted to do.
Ask somebody what their fear is- you might just discover something new about them, finding a new appreciation for that person.
