What Your Purdue Dorm Says About You

Dorms are a classic piece of the transition into college life. Everyone goes through it. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you're holed up in your last pick of the list. Regardless, there are categories that you unconsciously become a part of when you move in. But let's be hopeful, and see what your top choice of dorm says about you.

1. McCutcheon Hall

If you chose McCutcheon as your first pick, you probably haven't realized how far it is from literally everything on campus, or you just like far walks. Plus side is AC in your room and being two steps from Purdue West, but let's be real, there is nothing at Purdue West.

2. Harrison Hall

Oh Harrison Grille, how I wed my love to thee. Harry G. is the perfect place to grab a study break with their shake of the week and delicious flatbreads. Harrison also has their newly renovated bathrooms going for them, and they are a few short steps away from Earhart Dining Court, so they know where they're going to eat.

3. Hillenbrand Hall

Classic place for upperclassmen, Hillenbrand might be far from campus, but you can't beat Hillenbrunch on Sundays! Its modern design lends itself to those who appreciate the finer things in life. If Hillenbrand was your first choice and you didn't get it, your life in a dorm without air conditioning is probably miserable.

4. First Street Towers

The Ritz of Purdue residences. If you put First Street at the top of your lists, you probably enjoy having alone time and a place to call your own, but wanted dorm life too. On the same hand, laundry is factored into your room and board, so you get "free" laundry! Pretty nice for a freshman I'd say.

5. Earhart Hall

If you're in Earhart, chances are you are in an engineering or women in science learning community. You scored big with this one because you have Earhart dining court just below your room! It's always nice on those snowy days when you don't want to walk outside to grab a meal. In addition, you have Earhart On-The-Go below you also, so you have lots of options in this air-conditioned dorm.

6. Shreve Hall

"I live in Shreve!"

"Are you in Honors College?"

Classic question. If you put Shreve up at the top, you might very well be in the Honors College here at Purdue. You also might have the marching bands songs stuck in your head, seeing as their practice field is right across the road.

7. Meredith Hall

If you chose Meredith Hall as your first choice, you are probably really good with directions. If not, you're about to be. Meredith's unique X-layout is challenging to operate when first walking in, but you will get the hang of it when you're trying to find some AC relief from your steamy hot room. Since the rooms aren't air conditioned, it is said that many people hang out in the lobby, so in turn Meredith is known for it's great community life.

8. Windsor Hall

If you put Windsor at the top of your list, and got it as a freshman, you are lucky. The Hogwarts look-alike dorm is all girls, and is comprised of five different buildings within the area. Connected by underground tunnels, each building has something unique to it. Duhme has an exercise room specifically for Windsor-only members, and over in Vawter is Windsor Dining Court and Windsor On-The-Go. Sorry boys, hope this wasn't at the top of your list.

9. Third Street Suites

Third Street Suites are sweet. Having Third Street Market and a Starbucks below you is any person's (and basic white girl's) dream. Krach is also a step out the door, along with being between Wiley and Windsor. You probably are an upperclassman who enjoyed dorm life a lot, but wanted a little bit of freedom.

10. Wiley Hall

If you live in Wiley, you have a great proximity to campus. Being a few blocks from campus makes up for the lack of AC. With Wiley Dining Court a few steps away, you're in prime position to get at the front of the mile-long line during the dinnertime rush. And right after you can head across the street to the amazing co-rec and go for a nice run. Good choice with this one.

11. Tarkington Hall

Tarkington Hall? Or Testosterone Hall? Filled with boys, Tarkington has no AC. But it does have Tarkington Market, or Tark Mart. Like Third Street Market, Tark Mart has everything from snacks to gifts to toiletries. You are sandwiched between Wiley and Ford Dining Courts, so you always have a great meal at hand.

12. Owen Hall

Rush Owen anyone? Owen Hall is notorious for being filled with freshman Greeks. Filled with a great community that sticks together (literally) without AC, you might've put this as your first choice because of how popular the dorm is as a whole. Being close to The Acres, you never have to worry about finding a party to hang out at. Along with that, you have Ford Dining Court right next to you, and Slayter Hill as a great spot to chill on nice spring and fall days.

13. Hilltop Apartments

Is it a dorm? Is it an apartment? It's a dormartment! Hilltop is great for that apartment feel if you aren't quite wanting the community showers most dorms have for freshmen. Being able to make your own food is pretty great, especially if you love to cook.

14. Cary Quad

Cary has everything from Cary Closets (the extremely tiny, non-AC dorms) to Cary Suites (which on the other hand are really nice). Maybe you're an athlete and got a great room, or maybe you're a freshman who might've cried when you received your room assignment. Either way, Cary's location can't be beat if you're an engineering student, and you also have Ross-Ade right outside your window. Along with that, Ford's a step away.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

10 Reasons To Thank Your Best Friend

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
