The future of our desired career choices are very unknown!

According to, Melanie Gregg McGovern’s journey of jobs in the media, she has been through the “ins,” and “outs” of most of the communication fields.

With a bachelor in science from Fredonia, a two time award winning broadcast journalist, a former top aide a NYS Assembly member, Melanie McGovern is a person to look up to when it comes to aspiring students that want to work in the media.

Fredonia students scribbled notes in awe, as they observed a fellow alumni’s career paths. Starting off as a young rookie, working her way up to morning anchor. Only to be lead into WTVN, news talk radio station. Where she claims, is where you want to be!

Shortly after, she was working weekends and covering city hall. A young reporter making her her way up, she says, “You couldn’t ask for anything more.” Ironically her journey lead her back to her hometown on WBEN.

From covering a murder case in her own hometown, to the September 11 terror attacks, Melanie McGovern felt that since she worked her way to the top, she needed more opportunities, and made her way to work for the state legislature.

Working for Buffalo was a great time, but then she moved to corporate, insurance companies, and ironically back to news.

Melanie found her way back to news after being laid off for eight months. She had to learn the “new” news because of the technological advancements that had been made over the last couple of years.

Being a news producer that had to learn new improvements, Melanie says, “Adapt or Die!”

Technology is improving every year, and that means the media is changing as well. Melanie McGovern now resides at the Better Business Bureau as a social media coordinator, and a spokesperson.

Melanie McGovern’s tasks include: social media management, editing websites, blogs, and plans events for the Better Business Bureau.

So what has everybody learned?

Well for one, what you think you are going to accomplish, or what job you are going to get, or what opportunity will open up, you will never know until it comes to you.

Melanie McGovern has described working for the media, as an all moving, revolving adaptation of a process that can lead young rookies to the top anchor of the morning hour, to the city hall covering reporter. Communications is a versatile degree, that has opportunities for all that everybody is looking for!

Always A Pleasure!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
