What You Should Really Be Looking for in a Big or a Little

What You Should Really Be Looking for in a Big or a Little

Well sorority ladies, if your chapter is like my chapter, then you just finished recruitment and got a great new member class. Or maybe you are a New Member, and you just found your home. Either way, now that the excitement and chaos of Bid Day is fading away, the hunt for Bigs/Littles is on.

I genuinely hope that you can all find Bigs and Littles as amazing as mine. I hope your Big can be someone who you can look up to, someone who will buy you ice cream when you're sad, and just someone to be there for you through it all. I hope you find a Little who adores you, and who needs you as a role model. Most of all, I hope you find that sisterhood that I found in my Big and Little.

It's easy to get caught up in things when looking for your future Big/Little, but there are a few things you should really be looking for.

Let's start with the New Members who are searching for their Bigs. Remember that they all want you. It is considered a rite of passage to sorority girls to take a Little. They're all trying to impress you because they want to be a Big. So don't get caught up in who will buy you the best presents, or who will craft you the best crafts. Instead look for someone you want to be more like. You will be spending a ton of time with your Big and she should be someone you can see yourself learning from.

Pick a Big who shares similar interests as you; don't pick a Big just because you know she'll buy you drinks at the bar (unless that is your shared interest, then go for it). Think about who you see being in your wedding party. That is the girl you should pick as your Big, because if you do it right, your Big will quickly become your person. Being a Little is easy. There's not much advice I can give you about being a good Little, just be yourself and your Big will love you unconditionally.

Now active members, let's talk about what to look for in a Little. Just like it's easy for New Members to be swept up in the glam of gifts and presents, girls on the Little hunt can be caught up in wanting the "prettiest" or the "most fun" Little. Lucky for me, I ended up having the prettiest, most fun Little, but that's not why I picked her. I wanted my Little because of her heart. She is a kind, warm, and loving person and I want to be more like her. My Little is just as much of a role model to me as my Big is. And I really think it is important to look for a role model in a Little just as much as in a Big.

Maybe I just got really lucky, but I think it worked out so well for me because I knew what I was looking for. So while you're on the Little or Big hunt, remember that every sister is totally fabulous and that each one of them would make a great Little/Big. Whomever you get as your Big or Little will be great. So don't stress over this process. Everyone in your chapter shares core values, but it's okay to look deeper and find the sisters that will help you in the best possible way, and in doing that, you can't go wrong when picking your Big or Little.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

As this semester wraps up, students can’t help but be stressed about finals. After all, our GPAs depends on these grades! What student isn’t worrying about their finals right now? It’s “goodbye social life, hello library” time from now until the end of finals week.

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
