This May marked the 10 year anniversary of Ryan Murphy's hit show Glee and I couldn't feel more emotional about it.
For those who don't know, Glee was a six-season long show that aired on Fox. It was about a group of teenagers in a small town in Ohio that were part of a Glee club. The shows incredible success helped in jumpstarting actors such as Lea Michele and Darren Criss's careers. Celebrities such as Britney Spears, John Stamos and Gwyneth Paltrow took part in the series. Though not everyone's career skyrocketed after the show, everyone on the cast was incredibly talented.
Glee is a series that I continue to watch time and time again. I watched it when it was live and probably once to twice a year every year since. It still never gets old. The show not only includes incredible performances of iconic songs, but included so much more. Whether it be laughing at the crazy one-liner Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) said or crying as I watched Mr. Schue (Matthew Morrison) hysterically cry into Finn's letterman (Corey Monteith) in the "Quarterback" episode, the show always had me engaged.
The show covered so many topics and included so many different types of people. The club called New Directions included not only the individuals that were seen as misfits but also three football players and three cheerleaders. The diversity of members caused for so many different storylines. The show discussed teen pregnancy, bullying, LGBTQ+ relationships as well as many other topics that weren't being discussed in television shows.
Though I am obsessed with the show, it became very hard to watch after lead actor Corey Monteith passed away. Watching Glee without Finn Hudson was hard to do. Though the episodes were well made, you could tell that the show was just trying to finish their contract after Monteith's passing. Finn Hudson was the quarterback on the football team, the male lead in the glee club and the first "cool" person to join the club. His character was often seen as the level-headed genuinely good guy. Throughout the series, Finn dated lead female Rachel Berry (Lea Michele). Michele and Monteith were dating in real life up until his passing.
I don't see a time where I get tired of watching the series. Whether I am watching it because I want to hear good covers (their cover of "Don't Stop Believing" is so iconic), laugh, or cry, I never regret putting it on. So if you haven't, I highly encourage you to watch it.
